note -- you won't find *quality* in a turntable that has "built-in speakers"....

Before anything else, I have to say that the terms "good quality" and "built-in speakers" are probably somewhat self-cancelling, as another poster has indicated.

Look at the line of Audio Technica turntables, which range (on Amazon) from $100 for a basic unit to $300 for the top of the line instrument. Try this link: Audio-Technica AT-LP240-USB Direct-Drive Turntable with USB Output. These do not include the stereo cartridge, which must be purchased and fitted separately, and the turntable will require a number of set-up fine-tuning procedures which need not be professionally done, but require a little hobbyist-type dexterity. These turntables provide the bonus of transcribing your LP music directly to your computer hard-drive if you want to manage your music that way.

I purchased the AT-240 and am very pleased with it, and I think my vinyl records feel the same way.

Ashley - Whatever you end up with (those Audio Technica turntables are a great place to start) please know that 78 records need a different stylus size than microgroove records (45 and 33 1/3). You need to get a cartridge with a stylus that flips over to a fatter stylus (or two cartridges - one for 78s and the other for microgrooves), or the stylus will rattle around, dragging along the bottom of the groove on 78s and will sound very tinny and noisy.

Speakers built into the turntable base seriously prevent high fidelity, if that is a concern.

Mac - Thanks! My dad is 84 and hard of hearing so the sound just has to be good, not pristine. I was hoping for something with built-in speakers so he can just plug it in and enjoy it right away rather than having someone come over and set it all up for him. Thanks for the tip on the cartridges. This stuff is very complicated! I guess I am looking for one machine that makes it easy.

If you're looking for something uncomplicated, get him one of these... Crosley CR49 Traveler Portable Turntable

Especially if he's older. He'll probably remember the style and might have even had one like this in the past.

Thank you! I like it's simplicity but unfortunately I am looking for something with both speakers and audio-out.
