We should all be grateful that China, being so heavily invested in US assets, considers us "too big to fail."

Actually Europe is twice as big to fail - there's an interesting article I read at CNBC.com today - the banking sector of all of the EU is twice as big as that of the United States. And Europe is on the verge of catasttrophic turmoil

They have only 1 trillion of our 15 trillion debt. That is a drop in the bucket for them. Perhaps we can give them the moon in repayment.

Lisareads,
You write and ask: take Michael Sandel's class "to see the many factors that test each situation and its is not a simple matter of right or wrong... Yes, there are humans who sacrifice other humans for good reasons, does that make it wrong?

Yes. "Thou Shalt not kill."

Lisareads,
As for China and its one baby policy, its time to vote the bums out of the government. The affordability children in a family should remain within the realm of the family's decisions, not the government.

The depth of the male ego in the communist party is definitely a factor here. The remedy is a change of government.

Lisareads,
It is not just a $15 trillion dollar national debt equivalent to the yearly GNP, there are those unfunded Entitlements lingering in the background somewhere between $600 and $700 trillion dollars.

The moon is too beautiful and too valuable to be auctioned off as real estate. Newt Gingrich suggests the Government lease Federal lands to oil and gas developers to pay off the national debt. He expects some $18 trillion in revenue:

debt-the first number, $15.5 trillion. This potential for new federal revenue ...

BPL: Buy an infrared camera. Point it at the sky. Get the film developed.

Smurf: Which will prove what? That the cosmos generates infrared?

BPL: The cosmos doesn't generate infrared in just the wavelengths occupied by greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere. Will you for God's sake crack a book? This stuff is extremely well established. Your opposition sounds like creationism or the arguments of those who think aliens built the pyramids.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 15, 2012 2:39:47 AM PDT
Smurf: So "reflected by clouds" can vary by how much?

BPL: Varies with type of cloud and total day-side cloud cover, obviously. About half Earth's albedo is due to clouds, so in theory, if all the clouds disappeared, it could halve, or if cloud cover went to 100%, it could almost double. And clouds are very variable. But the chart was of annual averages. An energy budget for the Earth isn't meant to represent day to day weather.

RV: The affordability children in a family should remain within the realm of the family's decisions, not the government.

BPL: Externalities. Food is short, land is short. Your decision of how many kids to have affects other people, because if you have too many, your kids are eating my kids' food. China has 1.4 billion people in an area the size of the continental US.

You have just killed by using electricity and your machine. You just sweep it under the rug because you want to stay ignorant of what it takes to live the kind of life you are living.
Being naive of all the facts makes things simple as 10 rules to live your life by. Think about the difference in humans and the earth since those rules were written. not to mention 7 billion on a finite earth now.

Nothing is going to get our children out of slavery of lack of resources. Destroying the earth and all the life on it is not going to make the quality of life any better no matter how you slice Thou not shall kill. It is killing without seeing the blood on your hands. You are part of the 16% of the world population that uses 75% of the world resources. Please take a world tour and look off the marketed trail.

And Malthus will continue to be wrong in 50 or 100 years.
The world will change beyond recognition in even 20 or 30 years and definitely in 50 - 100 years. We'll be looked on as "primitive".

Look up synthetic life and synthetic food. My hunch is that by the end of this century, most food will be manufactured chemically in factories, e.g. "factory" beef instead of "cow" beef. Much more humane to the cows, and agriculture is one of the most damaging impact humans have to the environment. So bye bye land over-use.

Of course zero-science BPL and TSNTP do not even have the imagination to imagine the progress of science.

"The power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man".---- Thomas Robert Malthus

f: Malthus was wrong then and he is still wrong today.

BPL: Not really. Exponential growth really does outrun arithmetic growth. We didn't all starve to death in the 20th century because of the Green Revolution. We can't depend on another techno-miracle arriving just in the nick of time to save everything. Real life doesn't usually work that way.

"UN Climate Scientists Plead for Immunity from Criminal Prosecution"

"The perplexing plea will likely reverberate throughout the general scientific community as further affirmation that many climate scientists were not conducting honest research after all. John Bolton, a former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, questioned the motives, "The creeping expansion of claims for privileges and immunities protection for UN activities is symptomatic of a larger problem." "

Why ask for immunity, unless you haven't been honest all along and you've become afraid you might be caught?

Justice Lynn Smith ruled that preventing doctors from helping critically-ill patients to commit suicide was unconstitutional

That's where the story starts.
No proof, no other news company is covering it.
Just the liars at fox.
That leads me to believe that the story is made up.
It's possible its true, but unlikely.

Lisareads,
You write: "You have just killed by using electricity and your machine..."

Energy is not a limited resource. Great oil reserves exist in Africa and Latin America. Most dictators prefer to sell oil at a higher price to Western consumers than at a lower price to their own citizens. The problem is not limited resources, the problem is limited access to them.

Lisareads,
You write: governments are not going to save a finite earth."

Is the earth "finite" in resources, or is our capacity to manage these resources finite because of oppressive dictatorships?
