You couldn't hear the whole song? The whole song plays for me... 4:33 long! Now the Donny clip was too short!

Glad you liked the tune Anita! I like it too though I'm no big fan of Mr. Wilson.

Sorry Lisa, Andre Crouch is not as old as The Queen, Aretha. Andre's first big gospel song came out when he was a teenager. "It Will Never lose It's

Power" Something like this: The Blood that Jesus shed for me....way back on Calvary, the Blood that gives me strength, from day to day, it will never

lose it's power! His daddy's chruch, Crouch Temple, Church of God In Christ, was on Central Avenue, Billy Preston a child prodigy, and his mother

Rodena, played at Victory Baptist Church four miles south of Crouch Temple. Billy (passed away a few years ago) and Andre were closer in age than

Aretha. Darlene Love, who had a beautiful voce, can't remember the church name, We would go to the midnight brodcast. The pastor was Elder Rudy

Wayne Taylor and the broadcast was basically a gospel jam fest with EVERYONE MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD, PLUS a whole lot of 1963-1965 shout'n,

tamborines, drums wood floors and clapping to James on the panio, young Billy on the organ: one song would go on for up to 10 minutes, just an all out

jam session, every Sunday night. Back to Darlene, she was part of the Phil Spector "wall of sound" back up singers, a singer on the national teen

show "Shindig" on ABC, AND she was Danny Glover's wife in the Lethal Weapon series. James Cleveland (before he was a pastor) worte "Peace Be

Still"..."Master, the temptest is raging"...the winds and the waves shall obey thy will, Peace be still, Peace be still! I forgot his pastor and church

name. Edna Wright came to our church on night, her Father was preaching, this was a pentecostal church, 1963...Edna came into church in the with

makeup, eyeshadow, lipstick the whole shebang...Of course she was deemed "worldly" and a backslider, she didn't repent: Edna Wright was the lead

singer of the Honeycomb..."Gonn'a put it in the want ads." Inez Andrews was at St. Paul Baptist Church. The amazing part of all this...the over the

top gospel activity occured all within a five mile radius, in the sixties. I remember our church, Billy's church(Victory Baptist) Andre's, James Cleveland

Singers, etc. taking their chiors on the train to chicago for some convention, with a piano on the train, and my mom would not let me go! Can you

imagnie the rehersal on THAT train and the fun. I was only 9 or 10 and so hurt...Later out of Los Angeles, like 1974, James Cleveland had started his

own church on Western and Slauson. There was a historical recording "live recording" there around 1973/1974 : Aretha and his chior, the recording

was a two day session...try to Google it, it is FABULOUS. One more person...D.J. Rodgers....gospel to secular "Say a a a a you love me" , My two

cents! Enjoy

Hello K. M. Mundy,

I do believe Andrae Crouch is around the same age as Aretha. He may not have been recording as long as Aretha, but he's right up their with her in age. But, thanks for the history lesson. I knew that Billie Preston was in his first group. I remember Darlene Love too!

Oh, and what about the Caravans (who's youngest member was Shirley Ceasar!) that started with James Cleveand in Chicago.
James Cleveland and the Angelic Chior "Peace Be Still" Can still pick up on CD!
The Al Green's secular work "Call Me" had a WONDERFUL gospel song on it..."Jesus is waiting"

Maybe I should be "Youtubing " instead of recalling from memory....

Lisa,

You know I never really looked at this posting, but I agree with your opening statement. Gospel is an important component. I was mentioning that to a friend last month when the Grammys were on. You used to see all acts represented, including Gospel. You see it has been erased from the telecast.

My grandad was a preachers kid, so when I was younger church was important, although I will say my household and family members were a mixture of saints and sinners. And without fail, somehow the bible would bring up the biggest arguements you ever want to hear. Some insightful, some funny, but interesting nonetheless. And one of my aunts was a HUGE Rev. James Cleveland fan! She was heartbroken when he passed on.

I started thinking about them since i heard this:

Get Right Church

This song was it for me when I was a kid! LOVED THIS!!!

Another favorite, because my late cousin could SING this song:

GOD IS

Ooh, getting ready to cry just thinking about it.
