Looking for a GOOD, historical romance book, along the writing line of Catherine Coulter...pussing the envelope.

Looking for a new author, (like Catherine Coulter), in historical romance. One were it ISN'T love at first sight and the H tends to be crule at first.

Missy MN, IMO the Velvet Promise is what you"re looking for. At the begnning the H is a total jerk and is in love with OW. It was written in the 90's . I hope you enjoy it.

Just my two cents, but Velvet promise has to be one of the worst 'romances' I have ever read. Hated it so much that I haven't read any of her other books. IIRC, the H in this book is dubbed one of the top 5 all time worst H by our romance forum here. He is horrible to her ALL the way through the book and even at the end when H sees with his own eyes that the OW is the B**** that everyone tried to tell him she was, he still has an 'oh she can't be that bad attitude' and most of the posters believe there is NO HEA! Again, just me saying......feel free to check the customer discussions for the romance thread if you need some other feedback. I like to alert others when there is a very strong problem with a book!

edit - spelling

Have you read any Julie Garwood? One of my favorite historicals is Honor's Splendour - but I don't recall the H being cruel...maybe stand-offish. Still, great book.

I've never read Catherine Coulter but now I think I'll have to look into it. Thanks.

I have to say that I loved Deveraux's Velvet books, but do agree with you that Velvet Promise was my least favorite. Fortunately, I read Highland Velvet first, and fell in love. I think Promise was the last one I read (I have no idea how I got or read them out of order, BTW. It was WAAY back around when they were first published).

I also loved The Black Lyon, which is the prequel to the series, being about the Montgomery brothers' ancestor.

Jean - I think Honor's Splendor is a 'love' at first sight for the H. When she does what she does to his feet, he knows she is his and keeps her with him throughout book. h isn't certain b/c of the trauma in her past and is insecure.

HJ Leonard - I have several of the velvet books in my tbr list that I will read. Velvet promise just threw me for a loop and haven't recovered from the H's awful character. It has been about a year since I read VP and the others are at the bottom! Will get to them eventually.

D. Arnold - you're right. I had forgotten the details. Still a great book. :)

I must be weird but I really liked Velvet Promise. H was a proper fool but (imo) he did really love the h.

Gavin's gullibility to Alice's lies had me looking for the proverbial baseball bat to knock some sense into him. ;)

I also loved Gavin from The Velvet Promise. He did make mistakes but he loved the heroine and IIRC, she didn't make things easy for him at all. Also, the book is set in medieval times so that has to be kept in mind, he didn't behave out of the norm for that time period.

Have you read Stormfire or Dream Lover? And, I'm sure you've read it, but Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught is a great book too. The H does some pretty outrageous things...

Velvet Promise
Maybe spoilers*************************

I think he was way OTT. She was not as nice to him b/c she saw him making out with OW after the wedding ceremony and then proceeded to rape her when she said something. He told her to be glad he used some 'ointment' so she wasn't raped. He then told her he wouldn't stop seeing her and some other awful things. That happened in the 1st chapters and IIRC he didn't change his ways too much even to the last chapter. He was told and told by numerous people that the OW was a B**** and when he saw it with his own eyes his still stood up for her and didn't believe the worst about her. The writing was great, but to me the story stunk as a romance. I am very good at looking at the times, but this was pushing it. No way do I believe that a H could keep his thoughts about the OW to the very last of a fairly nice size book and then he is supposed to be in love with h after all that. Not in any time period. This guy just was not a H in my opinion!

This book just does me in for some reason. Thanks for the patience with the rant!!!
