down on luck heroine

Looking for some recs. Forgive me if i'm kind of vague i'm in a rut and looking for some new things.
A. I'm looking for something with the heroine down on her luck, like really down, maybe having a hard time affording food or finds herself with no place to go or just not an ideal place to go. Then the hero finds out and is outraged at the circumstances.
B. Something very similar to the above but maybe the heroine feels like she is a burden and tries to leave but of course our Hero is having none of that.
C. Our hero is nasty to our heroine at some point and kicks her out of his life, upon which she finds herself down on her luck, no money and barely surviving but he of course finds out and comes to her rescue.
once again i realize i probably sound pretty vague, but anything would be appreciated!

I don't know if it is exactly what you are looking for, but you might like Red.

You might also like Almost Like Being in Love (Lost Texas Hearts, Book 2). You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one.

This one matches pretty close, it's book three of the series, but you don't need to read the rest to follow along:

If You Deceive (The MacCarrick Brothers, Book 3)

Have you read The Duke by Gaelen Foley? An obsessed man causes h to lose her job as a teacher forcing her to sell oranges on the street where he harasses her on a daily bases. The H believes that this man killed the woman he loved and uses the h to try to get to the other man.

Colters' Lady: Colters' Legacy, Book 2 has a homeless heroine. Warning: this is a menage story by Maya Banks.

Thanks for the recs, everyone! Misty87mt Red sounds interesting, i've never caught sight of it at my used bookstore so i just might be hunting it down soon ohhhh and i haven't head of the one by Dodd but it sounds great :). KiatieM i loved loved loved If you Decieve, I read it not too long ago and was pleasantly suprised. Valdez i love the Duke, it was actually one of my first romance novels. I haven't read any of her newer stuff however. these recs are right up my alley!

I love these types of stories as well! I would definitely try Christina Dodd's Just the Way You Are (Lost Texas Hearts, Book 1) .. I think it fits more closely that Almost Like Being in Love (Lost Texas Hearts, Book 2) but I might be biased because I LOVE Just the Way You Are! One of my favorite books!

In these the heroine is definitely down on her luck... but the hero isn't necessarily outraged. He may have been the catalyst for her situation or he may give her safe haven. You can read through the descriptions to see if any of these novels are of interest to you:

* Dream a Little Dream by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
* After the Night by Linda Howard
* Tainted by Temptation by Katy Madison
* Dark Desires by Eve Silver

The Duke's Perfect Wife (Berkley Sensation), yes it's not even out yet, but the pairing was mentioned in The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (Berkley Sensation), and it sounds like it will totally fit the bill.

The h used to be engaged to the H, and now is very down and out and living shabbily with her dad in the country.

Some others:
The Secret Pearl
A Lady's Lesson in Scandal
When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Thorndike Press Large Print Basic Series)
White Tigress
Devil's Bargain
What a Gentleman Wants (Zebra Historical Romance)A Scandalous Marriage

The secret pearl by Mary Balogh features a heroine who's down on her luck.

An impossible Attraction by Brenda Joyce pretty much fits your request. I love this book, although there are few redeeming qualities of the H.

I second The Duke by Gaelen Foley. That was the book that got me reading historical romance.
Then there's Unraveled by Courtney Milan.

These are contemporaries:
Shelter Mountain (Virgin River) - Robyn Carr
Sunrise Point (Virgin River) - Robyn Carr - not released yet
Hotter Than Wildfire: A Protectors Novel: Delta Force - Lisa Marie Rice
Terms Of Engagement : Alpha Squad (Silhouette Romantic Suspense) - Kylie Brant
Rescue Me: A Novel - Christy Reece
Crazy Wild - Tara Janzen
All That Remains (Harlequin Super Romance) - Janice Kay Johnson
Simon Says Mommy (Harlequin Super Romance) - Kay Stockham

(Because I couldn't put all the links in my first post.)
If you're fine with erotic romance, there's Cherise Sinclair's The Dom's Dungeon, and also Breaking Free (Masters of the Shadowlands 3) - same writer.

What Price Paradise by Kathryn Allred
Lily by Patricia Gaffney (if I remember well, it had been a while)
The Fire-Flower by Edith Layton

The following may not be an exact fit but it is very close. It had been a while since I read some of them . Anybody who read them correct me if I am wrong.
Night in Eden by Candice Proctor
Lord of the Keep by Ann Lawrence
Masquerading Mistress (Harlequin Historical) by Sophia James
The Vagabond Duchess (Harlequin Historical) by Claire Thornton
Forbidden by Jo Beverley
Heaven Forbids by Karen Ranney
His Sugar Baby (Siren Publishing Allure) by Sarah Roberts

Posted on Mar 3, 2012 4:41:37 AM PST
Somebody's Baby (Silhouette Intimate Moments No. 310) by Marilyn Pappano
Promises Keep (The Promise Series) by Sarah Mccarthy

Maybe Tormented Hearts by Loreen Augeri----- servant
Wings of Morning by Victoria Thompson------ down on her luck , peniless and dependent on the H
To Have and To Hold by Patricia Gaffney
The Tempest: A Guy of Gisborne Story (The Gisbornes, Book 1) by Charlotte Hawkins (h is a peasant)

Elaine Barbieri, Margaret Hutchinson , Nan Ryan ( 'you belong to my heart' maybe. She is poorer because of the civil war),Patricia Rice, Anne Stuart may have books with this theme.
You may also want to check this website. Books are listed by themes and there is an 'across the tracks' section in which you may find more books with this theme.

Too check www.historicalromancewriters.com and I think you can do a search by theme.

The Courtship Dance (Hqn). Just finished this weekend. I have read the series and the widowed h is shown to be without funds except her house. She is helping others with society for money to keep food on the table. She has sold everything of value for the past 5 years(?). The H is awesome. What he does for her throughout the years is secretive and doesn't come to light until the last few pages and it is so heart-warming. This was a nicer book to read without alot of emotional drama for the reader. I teared a few times for their unspoken love and felt the characters were well brought out.

Caine's Reckoning (Hqn) by Sarah McCarty. The h and her sister were traveling with their parents and a crooked banker handling the family wealth arranged for them to be killed while traveling in the west. The parents were and the girls were taken by commencheros and raped and then sold and separated. The h is being held in a town where the town banker is in cahoots with the family's banker and they are keeping her as though she were unstable and in need of supervision, but she is actually locked in a room and sexually abused. The H is a Texas ranger and becomes aware of her situation when he rescues kidnapped women from the town, one of whom is the h. The second sister is dealt with in the book Tracker's Sin (Hell's Eight).

Almost Heaven The H ruined the h many years ago and she is shunned from society. The H also does something else which causes her to be reduced to poverty. When he sees her again he isn't outraged for her; in fact, he is kind of a jerk. Once he figures out that his actions were directly responsible for her circumstances he sets about making it right. Good book.

Wanted by Her Lost Love (Pregnancy & Passion) by Maya Banks
The H/h are engaged. The H's brother attacks the h and the H doesn't believe the h when she tells him that it was an attack and not an affair like the brother claims. The H kicks her out and gives her money but she won't use it. She leaves and is really sick from the pregnancy. She is working as a waitress and he can't forget about her even though he thinks she has betrayed him with his brother. He goes to find her and she is in bad circumstance. Good book.

I really want to second the recommendation for Dream a little dream, it fits your criteria perfectly.

I LOVED Wanted by Her Lost Love! I was a little dissapointed at the somewhat abrupt ending but Maya never dissapoints!

Ashley:

Yes, unfortunately short books mean fast endings. She just released another book in that series, and I'm having trouble finding it locally. If I don't find it soon, I'll have to get it on kindle. Maya also has another book, Tycoon's Pregnant Mistress (Desire) that would fit this thread nicely.
