Alot of us are reading a new genre and will NEVER go back lol!

LitRPG (Literature Role Playing Game) is like reading the greatest video game that you've never played. Kind of like Warcraft, DnD and Sword Art Online had a sexy baby :)

Which previous missions to Jupiter did you also consider pointless, and why?

OK, so if we want to actually discuss this point, what SHOULD be done with NASA?

1) There is no way our dysfunctional gov't is going to provide MOREand STABLE funding, which is what is really needed.
2) The current plan, which I wasn't a fan of originally but now think it's the best solution given #1 above is:
a) Help private industry with expertise and some funding to build low Earth orbit launch capability for manned and unmanned missions
b) Fund a new launch system (the SLS) for manned missions beyond Earth orbit
c) Leave specific future missions flexible since funding is so variable [If you start something and funding gets cut, you've wasted everything and have to start from scratch. Witness the Constellation program.]

For #2a, private initiatives spread the risk, and THEY will try things that NASA wouldn't attempt (like Mars One, or Dennis Tito's Mars 2018 Flyby with 2 people).

For #2b, unfortunately Congress keeps mucking up the situation by trying to tell NASA how to do it and when, but won't fund what's needed. Hopefully they won't mess it up too much.

For #2c, the general plan is to use the SLS to do missions to deeper space in gradual steps to learn how to do a Mars mission eventually. The reason the asteroid capture mission was recently added was to get some experience doing a manned mission to an asteroid sooner than a deep space mission to one could be done. Plus there is good science that could come out of it (like maybe we'll learn more about their makeup in case we need to deflect one from hitting us.)

I think the current plan is making the best of a bad situation. It's still a bad situation, though.

Marilyn,

"Although, Bob, if you want to argue that our whole dysfunctional government is just that short-sighted, wasteful and idiotic, I'd agree."
Thank you. That's the point. Past and current administrations (all past and current Presidents AND Congress) have put us in this situation.

Marilyn,

Your constant hatred for Obama makes your comments worthless. You still haven't figured out how gov't budgets and NASA funding work. I've told you many times to write your Congressfolk or join an organization if you want to make a difference. Keep your hatred over in the politics forum where it belongs.

PS..I guess the New Mexico Spaceport America isn't quite up to snuff for what they want to do. I've never seen a comparison, though I know it is about 33 degrees north vs. KSC at 28-1/2 degrees North meaning you get a bigger boost into orbit from Florida.
