If we all get a long, the intensity of weight on the narrow, long strip will exceed the threshold of Earth's strength that supports such mass of population getting along. Therefore, someone must get across in order to distribute weight evenly on the surface. Sort to speak.

Gerry Rzeppa says:
Why can't we all get along? Apparently because we're either underdeveloped, or broken, or both. When my needs/desires conflict with those around me I ought to objectively and consistently choose the path that maximizes the benefit and minimizes the difficulty for all. But I don't. And I suspect you don't either.

JUST SAYING says: If we all got along the religions of the world wouldn't have anyone to kill - over population would soon wipe out the world - just saying...

Ash : In well off countries where women can control fertility and there is a safety net so that old people aren't reliant on their children to survive, the birth rate tends to drop drastically. Often to sub-replacement rates.

Actually we DO all get along to a remarkable degree. Considering that there's 7 billion of us, the degree of cooperation in the areas of economics, science, etc is quite remarkable.

Lessfatman says:
The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion presents Jonathan Haidt's very well informed and articulated ideas about the question.

In short, he says that a society need rational liberal thinking to evolve and conservative traditional values to keep it up and running.
The tension between the two causes the conflicts within a nation.
A book worth reading.

I once had a doggie named Greg
Who liked to hump my leg
'Til finally one day
After he'd had his way
I changed him and renamed her Meg.

Bill M. says:
You mean get along here on the discussion forums? The reality is that this is a barely-moderated, free, relatively anonymous, open forum on the internet. On top of that, touchy subjects such as religion and politics tend to come up now and then.

So while trying to stop arguments might SEEM like a heroic cause, it's actually quite naive and doomed to fail.
