"If pressed about man's ancestry, I would have to unequivocally say that all we have is a huge question mark. To date, there has been nothing found to truthfully purport as a transitional specie to man, including Lucy, since 1470 was as old and probably older. If further pressed, I would have to state that there is more evidence to suggest an abrupt arrival of man rather than a gradual process of evolving." Richard Leakey, 1990 PBS documentary

Cranial specimens:
The cranial evidence recovered from Lucy are far less derived than her postcranium. Her neurocranium is small and primitive, while she possesses more spatulate canines than apes.

This[specify] was due to the earlier belief (1950-1970's) that increasing brain size of apes was the trigger for evolving towards humans. Before Lucy, a fossil called '1470' (Homo rudolfensis) with a brain capacity of about 800 cubic centimetres had been discovered, an ape with a bigger brain. If the older theory was correct, humans most likely evolved from the latter. However, it turned out Lucy was the older fossil, yet Lucy was bipedal (walked upright) and had a brain of only around 375 to 500 cc. These facts provided a basis to challenge the older views. Holy Crap!!!! You're telling me that out of the 10's of thousands of professional scientists that have dedicated their lives to studying evolutionary biology, there's a handful of them that don't believe evolution is a fact! Wow... I am totally convinced now.

By the way, I know about 3 Christians don't believe God wrote the Bible, so I guess that debate is settled as well.

LBatik says:
Talk about quotemining. Poor Leakey. A great man who has contributed more to the understanding of human evolution than just about anyone, misquoted to support _creationism_ is shameful.

The actual quote (in an interview, with a lot of context around left out from this quotemine) was regarding what Leakey was maintaining was the age of skull 1470, and his assertion that genus Homo seemed to have appeared 1.9 million years ago, before Homo's putative ancestors (he has since admitted he was wrong, as a number of people pointed out that the site the skull had been recovered from had been heavily contaminated by stone and bones from different geological layers, and the dating assigned could not be supported).

Creationist quotemining is the lowest form of dishonesty. If you can't come up with actual, physical _evidence_, give it up.

"I have read your book with more pain than pleasure. Parts of it I admired greatly, parts I laughed at till my sides were almost sore; other parts I read with absolute sorrow, because I think them utterly false and grievously mischievous. You have deserted---after a start in that tram-road of all solid physical truth--- the true method of induction, and started us in machinery as wild, I think, as Bishop Wilkins's locomotive that was to sail with us to the moon" ~Adam Sedgwick, Darwin's geology professor, excerpt from a frank letter sent on December 24, 1859.

"Sedgwick asked how Darwin could come to conclusions that are based upon imaginative assumptions." ~Tom DeRosa, "Evolutions Fatal Fruit", pg 78

I know how, because Darwin enouraged the use of imagination, over emperical evidence.

Mr. Zachary Alexander says: "Holy Crap!!!! You're telling me that out of the 10's of thousands of professional scientists that have dedicated their lives to studying evolutionary biology, there's a handful of them that don't believe evolution is a fact!"

No I wasn't saying that Leakey didn't believe in evolution, he simply admitted that concerning man's ancestry the evidence is thin to non-existent. Most people believe in evolution without ever seeing any evidence.

Francis Bacon, who gave us the scientific method had this to say about scientific methodology: "..for as our Saviour saith, You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the Power of God; laying before us two books or volumes to study, if we will be secured from error; first, the Scriptures, revealing the Will of God; and then the creatures expressing His Power; whereof the latter is a key unto the former: not only opening our understanding to conceive the true sense of the Scriptures, by the general notions of reason and rules of speech; but chiefly opening our belief, in drawing us into a due meditation of the omnipotency of God, which is chiefly signed and engraven upon His works." ~Sir Francis Bacon

Bacon says that God has given us two books and we are to study them both: The Book of scriptures and the book of nature, for you cannot understand one without the other. SCIENCE AND FAITH are complementary.

Peter says:
Brent A. Mortimer says: "Francis Bacon, who gave us the scientific method had this to say about scientific methodology"

No, he did not. He did not invent method. In every rational undertaking you use a method. The method is your tool.

But that's irrelevant. And so is Bacon. What's relevant is that you do not understand science or rational thinking. And sub-intellects like you are the problems of the world.
