What's the best novel you've read so far that has an athlete as the major character?

John Grisham's "Playing for Pizza is my favorite."

In my latest novel, a track and field runner, takes center stage.

I was not going to post as I have qualms with authors posting about their own books; but as you have already stuck your toe in the water... My book, "Long Live the Champion" is about boxing, a mixture of fiction and true boxing lore.

The Ball Player is my husbands book. He used his own experiences in pro baseball to construct the story. I have to check out the above recommendations for my family. They love sports books.

My favorite book with an athlete as the main character might well be Frank Deford's "Everybody's All-American." It was later made into a movie with Dennis Quaid.
