What is the significance of the mockingjay image? What does it mean to the people in the Districts and the people in the Capitol? Why does Plutarch Heavensbee show Katniss the hidden mockingjay image on his watch? Discuss how the mockingjay species developed and how Katniss happened to wear the pin during the first Games.

The mockingjay is a firstly a symbol of a Capitol plan gone awry. It becomes the symbol for rebellion both among the people in the Districts and those in the Capitol who side with the rebels. Plutarch shows the symbol to Katniss to let her know that he is on the rebel's side.

The Capitol developed some birds called jabberjays which could be sent out to the Districts to eavesdrop on rebels in the Districts during the rebellions 75 years in the past. They could listen to, remember, and repeat back entire conversations. However, the rebels soon figured this out and would participate in misleading conversations for the birds to relate back to their handlers. This meant they lost their usefulness to the Capitol and they were no longer used. However, they did not die out as a species but mated with mockingbirds to create the mockingjays.

I believe it was the mayor's daughter, Madge, who gave Katniss the mockingjay pin. I think it used to belong to her aunt, a tribute from long ago who was her mother's twin.

Juliette says:
The mockingjay, a gift from her friend madge, brings katniss home. She wears it throughout the games and it reminds her of her father.
It then, through the course of events, becomes the symbol of the rebellion. Plurach wants to alert katniss of whats to come, the arena, and the rebellion. The mockingjay pin, once an innocent reminder, becomes much more, the iconic symbol of rebelllion.
