The high number of authors self promoting their books in this discussion venue was a surprise to me, given Amazon's policy against self promotion except in approved discussion threads.

Then I came across a discussion "Looking for a good book, please help." thread. That discussion is full of self promotion and Amazon doesn't seen to enforce their policy over there. If I were an author, I would be confused about where I could post without violation of policy.

Just sayin'

Not an author, just a reader - try Ridder of Vermin by Patricia A. Gray (she's not even a relative of mine).

Some of the forums have been overtaken by SPAM. There are no moderators on the fora, so apparently Amazon relies on customers pushing the "report abuse" button.

I think it's a couple of different things....

Some of the older, long-running threads date back a couple of years. Amazon didn't set up the MOA and ban the spam until May 2011, so there are still a lot of the older posts which Amazon never deleted and which probably do give some authors the impression it's still okay. Then there's the attitude of quite a few of the regulars here (at least as far as I've found it) that they actually don't care about the spam. I'm no slouch when it comes to taking on the self-promo authors (as G. knows), but sometimes when I click on a thread and see post after post even I just roll my eyes and close it back up.

Also (and again, just my impression) in some of the other genre forums the regulars seem to be more of a cohesive group, with one or two "hosted" threads where there's more chat and also more self-moderation; that seems to be more effective. I do feel like I'm getting to "know" a few of the regulars here now, which makes it more pleasant.

The discussion I stumbled upon was initiated in April of this year, but I understand what you and G are saying here. And, like you, Miss M, sometimes I just close up the thread and move on. I'm looking for valid ideas, not necessarily sloppy self promotion. Some of the authors involved in the self promotion can't even do that right.

Anyway, thanks for the responses and the input. I appreciate the insights.

That may well be, however you are spamming the book. This is the fourth thread on which you promote this book. All you really have accomplished now is turning potential readers/customers off this book.

@JD - There are a few regular posters here who have tried unsuccessfully to stop the spam - It does irk me as a lot of regulars know.

It is the drive by spam - that is the worst - these are the posters who never return to see what has occurred - I doubt that they even know that their post has been removed in some cases.

These type of spammers - don't care about potential readers/customers - so I don't care about their offerings.

I would in a way have an expectation that anyone who uses the forums would have dome some research into what amazon expects/allows prior to anticipating in any forum.
