Amazon has lost a long-term customer because of using Fedex Smartpost for shipping. My order was shipped via USPS and arrived in Dallas last Friday. I was delighted that I'd have it in the mailbox on Saturday. Wrong. It was, instead, handed to Fedex Smartpost for that last 5 miles, and 3 days later it's still sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

That's ridiculous.

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 7, 2011, 11:10:23 PM PST - read this. This is
really crazy. The package was almost to this person's city when it was then sent
all the way to CA. What a mess. Your package might be in many warehouses
before it eventually gets totally lost.

If you call Amazon, they will ship you a new order and just ask that you return the original when/if it should arrive. Did you even talk to Amazon about this? I wouldn't leave a retailer without giving them a chance, especially if I was a long-term customer as you say you are.

Amazon has the best customer-service and customer-centric policies of any retailer I've ever encountered. Can't imagine that they wouldn't do all they could to make you happy about this.

Yeah I have never been a fan of FedEx smart post. It is a somewhat new system that after about 3 yrs of service I am shocked still has terrible bugs in it. A lot of it is due to confusion during hand-off. Problem is not enough people complain about it .

As Dog Lover said, feel free to call amazon. I have had a few orders lost in my years ordering at Amazon often due to Fed Ex, UPS or USPS having a faulty barcode scan . (it scans for like Arizona instead of New Jersey) A quick call to Amazon and I had a replacement sent over asap.

I'm kinda fascinated by P. Olver's profile. S/He has only one item on it but chooses to post to the Top Reviewers forum about a delivery problem? A long time customer irate over one delivery issue? Didn't even make contact with Amazon about it? I'm just not buying this at all.

It really annoys me that s/he says s/he is from Texas too.

Gives us reasonable and rational Texans a bad name.

Sorry if I offended your sensibilities. In trying to find a place to discuss my issue, this is where I ended up. I have no idea what "Top Reviewers" even refers to. And yes, I did contact Amazon, after reading other similar complaints about Fedex Smartpost. For me, this was a new shipping method that literally doubled the amount of time a delivery should take (a package which I still do not have, by the way).

Amazon refunded my shipping charges, but I'll know next time to choose another shipping method.

One thing I kind of wish Amazon did with shipping, is something that Newegg does. Basically you have your standard 3-5, 2 day and over night shipping. However they also give you a choice of carrier.

For example, I can select 2 day UPS for say $7.95 or 2 day FedEx for $8.85 (based on your location / type of items) So if you always had some odd problems with UPS you can request to have it sent via FedEx. Might be an interesting option for amazon to consider.

I've had similar issues with Fed Ex SmartPost and USPS.... lost packages which are either delivered to the wrong address, or are lost in the ethers! I've had lengthy discussions with Amazon.... even contacted Jeff Bezos after my third lost shipment, and I made the same suggestion.... give me a choice of carrier so that I can avoid the problems and wasted time of lost shipments. I am now trying a free PRIME trial to see if this helps. FYI.

Welcome to being a PRIME member BarbZ. I went prime mid last year and I won't go back.. The ability to have free 2 days shipping (most of my stuff comes UPS) is amazing. Sometimes stuff even comes overnight depending on which warehouse it left from.

Jason: Thank you. So far, so good. Mine are coming via courier, and I received a text message before I knew that my delivery had already arrived at 8 yesterday morning. I sent a package due for Saturday, so that will be my "true test". (I simply became tired of chasing after packages, and the last straw was that my gift for my boss was lost at Christmas)... Best, Barb Z.

Hi, Jason: Just a quick update. The package which was due on Saturday arrived today! (Effectively, overnight.) I'm sticking with PRIME.... it's simply worth it!

A PRIME update: so far, so good. I've ordered a bunch of packages... most come via courier service, and delivery has been great! (Most things arrive 2 days from ordering, even if I order past the shipment deadline for that day.... i.e.: order late Wed, arrives Friday AM, so it's effectively overnight shipping.) I'm with Jason: this makes a huge difference, and is worth the money IMHO! Enjoy. Barb Z

.... a couple of quick additions: I was hesitant to subscribe to PRIME, since stuff may still come USPS. (however, I have yet to see anything via USPS on PRIME). The trial has been great, even with items which are sold by the vendor, and fulfilled by Amazon (received one this AM within the 2 day window).

Also, since I previously shipped many packages Super Saver, and always had to meet a $25 minimum, I now can ship as little as I want as often as I want. Well worth it.

I have had sort of the opposite experience. UPS has delivered two packages damaged (one was an LG TV, which needed to be replaced overnight FEDEX via Amazon). Have had no issues withe Fedex Smartpost handing off to USPS, with Smartpost - you can receive it earlier, with UPS, it might get to the warehouse earlier, but they hold on till delivery date.

However, Prime is tempting (though I already have a Netflix subscription).

Posted on Mar 19, 2011, 8:31:31 PM PDT
Smartpost is picked up from the shipper, taken to a FedEx sorting facility. There it is separated and put onto a truck to be taken to another FedEx sorting facility near the receiver's USPS sorting facility. After being sorted by FedEx it's then handed off to the post office's sorting facility to be delivered to the buyer.

Altho it's cheaper for mass amount of packages being sent out one of the basic reason's for Smartpost is for FedEx to be able to deliver to post office boxes.

I am an Amazon Prime member, and order quite a lot of stuff from Amazon. I have just cancelled three subscriptions (for Core Wellness dog/cat food, and Fancy Feast cat food). My first orders for these products arrived in 2 days from the date of the order....however this month Amazon decided to ship my orders via Smartpost .. which means i) my debit card was charged for the product(s) a week earlier it was last month, ii) the food shipped a week ago, still is not here, and I have no idea (from past experience with SmartPost) when it will actually arrive and I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving week, so it's gonna sit on my doorstep all that time if it even arrives, and iii) I am now having to head to Petco to buy food because we're out of dog/cat food because the subscription is now late. So -- cancelled....and I will be placing the order monthly manually in order to get the 2 day reliable shipping. Really hate SmartPost. Worth exactly what you pay for it .. nothing!

The same thing happened to me with the Fancy Feast cat food. My first subscriptions arrived within 2 days from order date. This time they used Smartpost. They shipped on Nov 23 and their estimated arrival isn't until Dec. 1. We'll see if they arrive by then. I'm going to have to go out and buy some Fancy Feast because I can't wait that long. I'm also going to cancel my subscriptions and just order manually with Prime.

I see that smartpost isn't any faster today than it was over a year ago. I'm surprised it's still being used but I guess I shouldn't be what with the economy like it is today. You can track (sort of) your smartpost by going to the post office website and putting in your tracking# to see if FedEx has delivered it to your local post off yet.

Unfortunately, Prime 2-Day shipping now uses FedEx SmartPost as well, don't believe the Free 2-Day shipping, I joined last week and order 12 items on Black Friday/Thursday, the shipped them all but 2 via SmartPost, the 2 UPS orders came in on time, the other ten have been lost since Monday (tracking has stopped and no one knows where it's at as the USPS doesn't track that closely). Now that Amazon has decided to use a 10 day standard services as their "2-Day shipping" I have no reason to keep Prime, it's more of a rip off since you can get the Free Shipping within 8 days.

And yes, they were all Amazon shipped , 2- DAY Prime shipping, that's why I joined, I'm glad it's a free trial, claiming 2 day then shipping standard should be illegal!

How in the world can you 'talk' to Fedex? No phone number, nowhere, no how.

Posted on Nov 28, 2012, 5:53:57 PM PST
The address on my package was wrong - I must have made the error but I don't know how. When I went to the address where the package was supposed to have been delivered, its a strip mall with 25 stores. When I call FedEx to ask where it was delivered its 'I'm sorry sir, we gave this to the USPS and we have no further information.' and guess what - The USPS is closed.

I know this thread is really old, but I need to chime in. I have had Prime for for a while, and they were using Lasership a lot back then. I never had an issue with this company, but many Amazonians did. It was around the time when they stopped using UPS around Feb 2011.

If you have Prime, at some point you will have Smartpost/USPS as the courier. Don't get Prime because you think you won't have to deal with them. I have only had one package that didn't get to me, and Amazon sent a replacement right away UPS.

I use SuperSaver shipping and I nonetheless get stuff via UPS fairly often. I think it depends on what region you're in. But I agree that FedEx'Smart'Post is usually a dispiriting experience.

Always Right says:
Thanks for posting this information. I made an inquiry recently on the board because I made a large order that was shipped and divided into three shipments. One shipment told me it was coming ups ground and the other 2 told me they were coming USPS via UPS Smartpost. I get email updates when packages are coming my way. This is the first time I have ever received a notice from UPS that this had been shipped via USPS and the scheduled date was changed from the 5th to the 7th and for an additional $3.50 UPS would deliver the package one day earlier (meaning the 6th). I am concerned because my order page delivery is guaranteed for the 5th. Not knowing what day it will arrive is premature for me to be reporting this, but it still bothered me because in 95 orders during the last 6 months, this is the first time ever I have received this notice from UPS. Thanks for your note as I will wait and hopefully receive my packages on the promised date. If not I will be sure to let Amazon know.

J. Faulk says:
AR, my understanding of UPS Smartpost is that UPS delivers to the appropriate post office, and then in a day or two USPS delivers to your address.

Tracking may seem to indicate that UPS has delivered to you, but the pkg actually has been delivered to the post office.
