"Homicide: Life on the Street" was, is and probably always will be the best detective show ever on TV, that's just a given and the way it is. Every other show can line up behind it.

Ahhhh, Quincy :) Who knew the Coroner could solve crimes too?!?
Barney Miller - now that was comedy in the precinct for sure!
Rockford - living in a trailer in Malibu. Nice.
Law & Order franchise has always had good writers & actors!!
Good choices :)

Also - does anyone remember David Soul in UNSUBS? This show was the predecessor to all CSI type shows. VERY COOL and advanced for its time. Very cool. Just like Starsky, I mean Hutch...which one was David Soul? :) :)

S.Waters says:
Spenser For Hire- You always knew Spenser would get the job done with his side kick Hawk.

Quincy-He was great but I would never have wanted to end up on HIS autopsy table.

Father Dowling Mysteries- What likable priest and amateur detective all rolled up into one.

T.J. Hooker-William Shatner was very charismatic in this series. As were several other characters, too.

Thats all I can think of right now. : )

I second Monk.

I HAVE to put in a vote for Miami Vice, the original TV series. Pretty darn good stuff in its day.

I also have to suggest a new one here, THE MENTALIST. Good characters and pretty tightly written. Very interesting.

I agree, THE MENTALIST is an excellent show and really quite "fun" to watch. The Closer has to be on the list as well, it's easily one of the best ever.
