...And you had lots of trade in credit, would you have any means/laws/protections to get them to pay you back?

You seem young. Gamestop isn't a donut shop. What you're describing is impossible.

Gamestop is the hypothetical serving as a universally known entity representing my local shop that just shut down overnight.

A "universally known entity" doesn't shut down overnight though. They are a publically traded company that employs around 20,000 people. They have fiduciary responsibilites to their share holders. Your hypothetical makes no sense.

rather give my money to gamestop than target, walmart, kmart etc

So why not just ask "Is there any way I can get something now that my mom and pop game store closed down?" rather than coming up with an imbecilic hypothetical that makes no sense and then trying to defend said hypothetical because you don't like logic and your e-pride got a little bruised.

If your local, privately owned, independent game store went out of business... No, you have no way to recoup that lost credit you've built with them.

Gamestop is a poor analogy because it is not privately owned, independent, or capable of going out of business overnight. There would be a period of liquidating assets and selling off remaining inventory to satisfy creditors.

Gamestop was just the analogy of how the trade in system works. Just annoyed how they didn't notify anyone. And even more annoyed they still sell on Amazon...

Joshua C says:
Right, I get the analogy. It's a poor one, though, regardless of how you choose to defend it.

Be annoyed all you want, though, it still won't get you any of that credit.

You would have the status of a general unsecured creditor. Your chances of any recovery are low.

But it's just more views of people berating you. That sounds less helpful to me

No, he is just asking how trade-in credit would be treated in a liquidation.

Oh, okay. Just wondering why he asked that.
