Thinking of updating my pc and looking at the 680. Seems to cost around 450 on most sites. So vgf, is it worth it at that price or would I be overpaying for what this card can do over cheaper ones?

I have a gtx 650, and it was probably only half that price. And this card hasn't had a single bit of trouble running anything. I don't know how much better a 680 is, but for that price... not sure it's worth it.

A 680 is significantly better....Like, off the charts better than a 650. Not that a 650 is bad by any means, the 680 is just a beast.

Considering that a 660ti is around $289.00 now and you can get a 680 for around $440, I'd say that it may be a good choice.

This card would allow you to max out any game on the market currently and probably for the next few years.

I did not realize how much better it was, That is quite impressive.

I got mine at a discount, it was only 130$ when I got my PC so it was more worth it for me (I was trying to build a mostly budget rig, with a bit of extra power hehe)

well the superclocked GTX660 that i'll be getting early next year will only cost me around $229

If you're running on a single small monitor I'd say skip the 680. If you plan on playing on a larger screen where you need higher resolutions or across multiple monitors, I'd say go for the 680.

I'm actually planning on picking up something along those lines next year. Or maybe sooner. I have $150 in cash back on my credit card, I could sell my 6870 for around $100, then open a Chase checking account and get $200....

My wife is going to hate me.

yeah, I have two monitors, one being fairly large.

I actually already bought it. Was depressed after another dismal showing from my steelers yesterday and wanted to cheer myself up. So please people, validate my inebriated decision-making skills. :)

ps - come to think of it, a lot my video game related purchases seem to happen after I've been drinking all day on Sunday.

Lol, awesome! Let us know what you think of it.

Don't forget to try Dawn.

Speaking of Dual Monitors, it seems most gamers have them these days... what we need are more games that can take adventage of it. Have the minimaps on the secondary monitor or information displayed there. I think it would be nice.

Only game I played that does this is supreme Commander, it allowed me to have the full view of the map on one monitor while the normal game was on the main one. was nice.

I highly recommend the EVGA GTX670 FTW if you'd like GTX680 performance for less.

Uses a GTX680 board and cooler, vs short board of reference 670's.
Has 8 phase VRM, enables better OC than even reference 680's, Has a 145% power target on Precision X
Because it uses a 680 board, fits 680 waterblocks and backplate as well.

EVGA GeForce GTX670 FTW 2048MB GDDR5 256bit, Dual Dual-Link DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, 4-Way SLI Ready Graphics Card Graphics Cards 02G-P4-2678-KR
EVGA GeForce GTX670 FTW+ 4096MB GDDR5 256bit DVI HDMI DisplayPort 4-Way SLI Ready Graphics Card 04G-P4-3673-KR

For all intents and purposes, it performs like a 680. You will feel it is worth it, great performance and has gotten even better with every driver since launch.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into this a bit more. If they are close enough in performance I'm sure I could return my 680 when it comes and get 670 instead. Nothing like doing the research after already placing the order!

edit: ordered the 680 for around 40 bucks more than what the 670 seems to be going for. Is there 40 dollars difference you think?

Sorry i glossed over your post where you stated you purchased it.

Not sure its worth the legwork to return. If its Amazon, it may be painless. Thats up to you. Pretty much the same perf, give and take a few percentage points.

Is the 680 card a 2Gb or 4GB? Is it factory OC'd or a reference model?

$440($20 rebate makes it $420.00) gets you the 4GB GTX670 FTW . 2GB version is $399 plus $20 rebate...$379.00

Not sure when that much Vram would be needed, but those days may be here shortly down the road...and specially running multiple monitors. I know the 4GB 680's are north of $500 range.

Just letting you know from a value/performance standpoint. I'm sure the 680 you ordered will be satisfactory, should you decide to keep it.

It's a 2GB and I'm pretty sure factory OC'd, though I'm not sure about that. I'm, unfortunately, not the most educated/savvy person when it comes to computer hardware, so I appreciate the input.

It is not an overclocked model, just a reference design. Note how the GTX670FTW cards 'look' identical, using same board/case design. Not knowing where you got it from , i can't say its worth the exchange or if they are offering the FTW's at same price/rebate as Amazon.

Nothing wrong with it though. EVGA is the prefered Nvidia vendor, great policy and support.

Good luck.Enjoy!

I received the 2GB GTX 680 MSI Twin Frozr gpu as a gift this holiday and its changes the way I play my computer games now for sure. It may be a bit overkill for running games on my 42" flatscreen at 1080p, but it races through everything I throw at it.

I have an evga gtx 680 ftw and it can run crysis 2 on ultra. Just make sure to turn off hud bobbing in the settings, I think it really ruins the fluidity of the game. It is on by default.

yep, it's worth it, it's even better than the 690, according to a graphics card comparison video on youtube.

I always support people spending money that isn't mine.

Get it.

Installed it a few days before xmas, and haven't had time to really test it it out yet. From what I've seen though, I couldn't be happier. The thing is an absolute beast. I'm very tempted to play though witcher 2 again just to experience it with this card.
