DVvM says:
Can you define specifically what you mean by Wuxia? This affects my answer.

Kung-Fu movies that deal with wuxia themes.

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 9, 2012, 4:22:49 PM PST
DVvM says:
That's not a definition of "wuxia".

Well, I mean does it have to be made in China? Does it have to heavily emphasize swordplay? Does it have to be set in a fantastic or historical setting? Is "Iron Monkey" a Wuxia Film? Is "Once Upon a Time in China 2" a Wuxia Film?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 9, 2012, 4:30:01 PM PST
Pfft, IDK. Just post whatever martial arts film I guess. Iron Monkey is awesome BTW.

DVvM says:
So you mean "Martial Arts film" not "Wuxia film"?

The distinction is like the distinction between "Science fiction" and "space opera."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxia

Wuxia literally "martial hero", is a broad genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists.

Example: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

DVvM says:
I'm familiar with the genre. I wanted to know what Wanda meant when he said "wuxia" since people will disagree on what is and is not wuxia.

I mean, most in the know would say that "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" are Wuxia films, but would likewise claim that "Magnificent Butcher" and "Fist of Legend" are not Wuxia films.

Kung Fu Hustle

I think we are getting a bit too invested in the meaning: Let's go with martial arts...The Karate Kid! Actually, Enter the Dragon and Hard Boiled are two of my favorites. Does the Raid count?

DVvM says:
Truly outstanding Martial Arts films that you should make a point of watching: 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Drunken Master, Fist of Fury, Fist of Legend, Five Deadly Venoms, Clan of the White Lotus, Ip Man, Invincible Pole Fighter, Warriors Two, Magnificent Butcher, Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time in China 1 & 2, The Prodigal Son, and I could go on like this so I will stop.

Most of these I would not term "wuxia". Five Deadly Venoms and Iron Monkey *maybe*. Arguably Once Upon a Time in China.

Kung Fu Hustle is hilarious.

I'm surprised no one has said Hero yet. I think that one may be my favorite simply because along with being an aesthetic masterpiece, the story is very mature and compelling.

Dont know Wuxia, but martial arts in general? Fearless, IP Man, Prodigal Son. Best scene however will always be Bruce Lee snacking on some chips while kicking some @$$

Probably the The Legend of Drunken Master. Jackie Chan at his peak and so many amazing set pieces.

Once Upon A Time In China: Part 2

Jet Li vs Donnie Yen in two of the most entertaining fights I've ever seen. I'm a big fan of Hero for the same reason.
