Every RPG After playing it you think that hitting the button at the right time will somehow result in a better attack.

It doesn't... but I want it to!

You've played any PM: Sticker Star at all!

It's not a bad game!

Try Final Fantasy VIII or Costume Quest.

FFVIII is my least favorite FF.

I will play FFX-2 before I touch VIII again!

Haha, I was just kidding.

If you like that style of combat, though, check out Costume Quest. It has a turn-based mechanic, but you can do timed button presses to do extra damage or block part of an attack.

Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant also have button presses in combat.

Lost Odyssey... didn't like that game, tried so hard to. But I just couldn't

Last Remnant on the PC remains one of my favorite games of all time.

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episodes 1 & 2 also have active attacks and defense. Excellent games, and a lot more fun to play than episode three. I'm disappointed Hothead Games and Gabe lost interest in the series.

Do they have the PA humor?

That Emu Kid says:
Yeah, and the jokes are much more accessible because it's plot-based rather than based on current events in the game industry. My wife doesn't read PA at all, nor does she follow gaming news, and she really enjoyed them.

The humor is still great in episode 3, as it's still written by Tycho, but it was developed by Zeboyd and Gabe didn't take any part in the art direction, so it's a completely different style of game.

Yeah, the third one is more like that Cthulhu Saves the World game, right?

I know what you mean about hitting the button at the right time. The Mario & Luigi RPGs use the same concept and I find myself trying to time button pushing in other RPGs and sometimes platformers.

Sparhawk says:
Alllll the way back to Super Mario RPG. Mario & Luigi added one innovation, when your bro gets knocked out the other bro has to go and defend for him, complicating the timing immensely. Have you ever tried to jump over a hurtling turtle shell while hefting your brother on your back?

Cthulhu Saves the World has the first-person view of combat, doesn't it? This one is more 16-bit Final Fantasy style. It's neat and funny, but I'd have preferred another game in the vein of the first two.

I was doing that with Super Mario RPG on the SNES.
