It seems that Fantasy books like Jordan's and Martin's take on a life of their own and get so overlong. The last Jordan book I read was some years ago and it took place in like a day, and they practically walked the entire time. And the men were constantly portrayed as whining wimps and the women as screaming banshees. I am all for the author making money, but damn do they drag it out, like they don't know how or want to end it, and then it becomes a chore to read.

I am slowly slogging through Book 4 of Martin and just stopped because nothing
happens.

I read the Eddings books in High School and they were to the point and really good. Not sure if they'd hold up now.

I actually loved Jordan... I agree Martin was boring by books 4 and 5... For Jordan the first 4 books were great... and for me that was enough to keep me interested for the remainder of the series, even in the slow parts, but when the very first book nothing happens... I don't know...

I loved Jordan through 5 or maybe 6 and then it just went downhill. I hear book 10 or so got interesting again. Then the posthumous ones were decent. But the characters got grating, the random polygamy. Nynaeve needed to die, and it just went on and on like Nascar.

I don't know... I thought 9 was pretty good, 10 was a trainwreck but even Jordan acknowledged that, and 11, 12, and 13 have all been good. So of 14 books, that only leaves 4 that were boring and subpar... not bad if you ask me.

Nynaeve was one of my favorite characters... but I can see how you can get sick of these characters after so many novels, the polygamy... along with the "bedfriends" aka lesbians... were... interesting choices to ad to the novel. There was never any male homosexuality... but it seemed like every other Aes Sedai was a closet lesbian...including the Amyrlin Seat...

I think I just moved on to other things. It was the late 90s and I got into history books, as that is my profession. I did like the one dude with the axe, then Jordan married him to a woman and made the point of how submissive he was. I think with Jordan and Martin and many other authors, their weird real life issues get shoehorned in the book. Like Stephen King and sex with 12 year olds in IT.

I did stop at book 8 or 9. I think 9 was Winter something and it was really good....7-8 were not, and at that point it was taking 2-4 years between books so I moved on as I forgot the previous one!

its been 6 or 7 years since i read eddings. i read one book in his second trilogy, the belgariad or mallorean, whatever, then i tried to read one of the books in the first trilogy and i hated it. haven't read anything by him since.

I have yet to read Martin. he's on my to read list.
