Tank! Tank! Tank! was one of the Wii U launch titles in all territories, but by looking at Miiverse activity it seems like the arcade game didn't catch on at home in Japan. Tomorrow, Namco Bandai is taking a different approach with Tank! Tank! Tank!-they're turning it into an upgradable demo.

Wii U owners in Japan will be able to download a Tank! Tank! Tank! basic pack for free on the eShop. The basic pack allows players to select the city map for Free for All, Team Battle, and Giant Monster modes. Tank! Tank! Tank! basic pack supports multiplayer, but you can only play the game three times each day. Purchase any downloadable content and this restriction disappears.

Namco Bandai has extra maps like the beach, canyon, and volcano levels for 200 yen each. My Kong mode, one of the features made for Wii U, lets a fifth player control a giant monkey monster with the GamePad. You can purchase this for 1,000 yen ($12) or at a sale price of 200 yen ($2.30) until January 31, 2013.

Campaign mode costs an additional 2,200 yen ($26). Altogether, it costs 4,800 yen ($57) to upgrade the basic pack to the full game. If you want until the My Kong sale is over Tank! Tank! Tank! is 5,600 yen ($66). Yeah, that's less than a full downloadable version of the game, which costs 5,040 yen ($60), but that won't be available until February 21, 2013.

While it costs more to buy Tank! Tank! Tank! piecemeal, you can opt to only by the parts you want for a low price. My Kong mode for like $2.30 is worth it when you have friends over and that's probably enough Tank! Tank! Tank! for everyone. So far, this promotion has only been announced for Japan.

The FPS genre needs this badly.

I honestly would like to see more games sell themselves piecemeal.

Like, there are quite a few games where it would make sense to sell the campaign and the multiplayer (or specific multiplayer modes) separately.

For multiplayer-centric games like Madden, FIFA, and Call of Duty, it would make a lot of sense to sell the SP a la carte to fence-sitters and then get them to pay extra if they want the MP experience.

It would also help publishers realize that for quite a few games, multiplayer really isn't a selling point (e.g. No one would pay extra for the MP in Spec Ops: the Line after playing the campaign.)

Reminds me of Dawn of War 2's eventual sale of The Last Stand separately.

Also I like '3 times per day', it's not as psychologically limiting as the 3DS's demos which can only be booted 30 times total.

If they do this in madden I would be all over it. Instead I am normally a year behind since I do not play online. I just like the career mode since I like taking someone from high school through college and then through the pros. I also get into the franchase mode alot too.

Yup!

But if they would charge $30 and $30 for the SP and MP of, say, Madden then EA could be getting $30 of my money instead of $0.

Its not so much being cheap. It is just paying for what you want. People have been waiting cable companies to do this for years. There are so many games that I just play single player for since I dont want to be bothered by multiplayer. Then there are games that I just play the multiplayer for.

Madden - Single
Halo - multi
Uncharted - single
Call of Duty - mutli
Assassins Creed - single

And those are just a few examples.

I think I would be open to trying more CoD games (only ever played Classic) if I could just get the campaign because multiplayer CoD doesn't interest me.

I've seen this with Cave's shmups on iOS, too. I think this will be one of the good things if our future consoles really *will* be downloadable content only. I knew I was never going to play Halo 4's multiplayer, so I waited for a price drop. I just don't really get into online MP much. If three versions of the game were available at launch-- say, $30 for MP only, $30 for campaign only, or $60 for both-- I would have bought the SP version day 1.

One of the many problems, of course, with this method is that less than a month after release, physical copies of Halo 4 were being sold for $40 pretty much everywhere. Sales happen frequently with physical media (due to surplus, etc.).
