Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with Gamasutra, has his doubts when it comes to the core games on the Wii U. However he does feel there is great opportunity when it comes to new hardware.

"We haven't announced anything," says Zelnick about releasing core games on the Wii U. "I'm skeptical." However he did add that "For a company like ours, it's a great opportunity. [New console launches] separate the winners from the losers -- and we fully expect to be one of the winners."

The start of a new generation he says is the best time to launch a new IP. "I don't want to minimize the challenge of creating titles for new technology or the economic challenges of doing that, but if you get it right, it's a terrific time to launch a new IP," he continued.

Zelnick did make one more key point. There is a risk when it comes to overexposure of a studios key franchises. He believes it is a bad idea to have a new release annually on non-sports titles. "I don't aim to annualize our non-sports titles because I think you run the risk of burning out the consumer -- even if its very high quality [product]," he says.

He's in control of development. He has the chance to get rid of that skepticism by producing mature titles for the Wii U. If consumers see that mature games are being produced, there won't be as much skepticism, because they will be seeing results. We won't be wondering as much about the future and if we will ever see core mature titles.

I wonder if Zelnick understands that you need to actually release a quality game for a system in order for it to sell? They published Carnival Games and some other piece of shovelware on the Wii around 2006-2007 and then in 2010 Zelnick sniveled that the Wii only counted for 1% of their revenues. Well, duh!

Sega and Capcom didn't have a problem releasing M rated games on Wii. The DS has a large number of mature games in its library. It just seems to me that Zelnick is looking for a reason not to support Wii U.

I'm sure we'll see the NBA 2k games at some point on the Wii U. The real question is if we'll see the Bioshock's and Rockstar Games projects on it.

THANK YOU! Take two has been nothing but fail for a while, and he's being critical about what he feels the next N console can do. Maybe if he can hire some talent to come up with some IP's that don't bomb, they might have enough imagination to use the hardware.

I hope that Dev's don't think that every game requires use of motion or tablet to be a success. If a game fits otherwise, you don't need to shoehorn in a gimmick to make it "fit" a console.

I wouldn't mind Borderlands 2 on Wii U if we could use the controller for repairing Claptrap, rummaging around piles of remains in search of items or as a scope for the sniper rifle.

I could see Rockstar really jumping on the Wii U. A game like RDR could utilize the tablet nicely, because it gives Rockstar the ability to customize the map. It's not anything showstopping, but it's a nice extension.

DVvM says:
I'm honestly not sure that Take-Two is the entity to be asking about "what's going to succeed or not."

Here's their yearly net income (in millions) for the past seven years (i.e. this generation):
2006: (185) (October filing)
2007: (138) (October filing)
2008: 97 (October filing)
2009: (140) (October filing)
2010: 43 (October filing) / (123) (March filing)
2011: 48 (March filing)
2012: (108) (March filing)

(In case you didn't know, numbers in parentheses indicate losses). So two years of profits versus five years of losses, and their two profitable years correspond to the releases of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption. Their losses in 2006 and 2009 each exceed their cumulative profits for the generation.

So "able to predict the future in terms of financial success" they aren't. They had better hope they have a better handle on the next generation.

Man, their losses over the last seven years is almost five times their profit.

It's a tough business to be in, and does Take Two have *anything* going for them other than Rockstar? I mean 2K puts out some great games, but I don't think they're especially profitable.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 18, 2012, 3:32:11 PM PDT
Borderlands 2. 2K is their subsidiary.

They're apparently not making Take-Two a lot of money (2k is also Bioshock's publisher, including the2 and Infinite.)

Is that like Mario Kart, except with Niko Bellic instead of Mario and ping-pong instead of racing?

Since that sounds like a really strange game.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 18, 2012, 3:49:35 PM PDT
Actually, it uses the same engine as GTAIV and Red Dead Redemption and as strange as it may sound provides a much more intense one-one multiplayer experience than lots of fighters I've played.

Wow why does anyone make video games? Bad news across the board unless you make COD or WOW. I thought Take 2 made games gamers actually liked and they're headed in the wrong direction from the looks of things at least until they get GTA V out. I like RDR and LA Noire myself.

Apparently mature games don't suceed on any system...

Hey, another third-party dev who won't put their games on a Nintendo system because they don't sell because they don't release them. Oh well. Hopefully the Wii U will get off to a hot start so some third parties will change their minds. GTA V would be nice.

Jawwaad says:
If Nintendo gives us the option of being able to use the pro controller on any game instead of being stuck with that tablet, then I see no reason why Mature games will have a problem succeeding on the Wii U. I do think Nintendo will have to work hard to actually get the gamers who actually play Mature game interested in the Wii U but I don't think that will be that hard this time around as Nintendo is showing much love to 3rd party developers.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 19, 2012, 4:09:58 AM PDT
You do realize it's up to the developers to program that not Nintendo... and before you say Nintendo should make it a lot check; don't forget many a developer whines that Nintendo is too restrictive at times and Nintendo is now trying to be 3rd party friendly.
