Moving past that obstacle, I like that I can insert my jars, add some water, and press a button, and hear a beep when my jars are sterilized. I also own the Auto Jam Maker, but even if making jam the conventional way, just fill your jars, insert into the autocanner and press a few buttons. It beeps when your product is canned. I've made bread and butter pickles, salsa and traditional jams. By the way, I use Ball canning mixes, and they are awesome.
Another complaint people have is that you have to use "their" recipes. Well, yes and no. When I go to the fresh preserving website, there are lots of recipes to choose from. I've adapted some of them without problems. I think it's a liability issue, so that people follow safe canning rules. You just have to understand that this is not an pressure canner. You can't can low-acid products, like meats. Period. End of discussion. I know this product seems a bit expensive, but it's a great "gadget". If you can save your pennies, and want to get into the world of canning-- you will love this Automatic Home Canning System.
P.S. I also was able to use a coupon at my local kitchen store around Mother's Day, bring my price to $250. I have the Ball Jam & Jelly Maker also and LOVE that too.
