Show no fear. This canner has solved a problem for me. I simply could not make peace with canning things to store on a shelf. Despite others telling me how easy it is--including my own son--I was having none of it. I love cooking, and I make my homemade pastas, pizzas, and breads; and yet this was one thing I felt I could not get past...other than making refrigerator jams/jellies, I was not comfortable with doing shelf canning...until this automatic canning system came along. Granted. If you are a full-fledged canner, this won't be for you. It is more for the 'hobby canner,' novices like me who want to dabble in canning on occasion w/o the fear of doing it unsafely. Customer service confirmed that one must ONLY use Ball brand jars and their recipes. I believe this is bc they simply want to assure success with their own tested recipes. But I must confess, after owning this for about 6 months now, I use this for any kind of jam/jelly recipe and I am just branching out to savory items, pickles and other pickled veggies. When a recipe I see from another source mirrors their own, when compared side by side, I feel ok with using those recipes in it too and have had success. I will use a waterbath on stovetop for those recipes I find too far removed from BALL'S, but boy, it makes you really appreciate the canner in comparison...it is so easy to use this canner, the jars are preheated for you, too; you don't even have to presoak the lids. I can do this half asleep, and did, just this morning making watermelon jelly in it before 9:15am. So for hardcore canners, this may not be what you want, but for me, it is just right.

I bought this canner on Cooking.com at $299 along w/a good discount and free shipping. Wms-Sonoma is now carrying this item, too for $299.

I have been wanting to can for sometime now but I have a glass top stove. This automatic canner is the perfect solution. I have had it for about 2 weeks now and I have already canned jelly and spaghetti sauce. Best thing is, you do not have to watch over it like you do with old fashion waterbath canning. You set it and forget it until the timer goes off. I would definitely recommend this quality product.

I didn't realize when I bought this that I can't do fresh vegetables. I was hoping to do my green beans. I just finish cleaning my green beans went to check on the recipe to see how to use it to find out that I can't use it. This was highly disappointing when it is called an "Automatic Home Canning System"

While I love the canner for jams, I'm really ticked that I can't get the company to send me recipes for what it advertises. Do you realize there is only ONE recipe for peaches in the book.....some spiced honey peach recipe......how about just good old plain fruit, plain peaches with a simple syrup. How about plain pears? come on Ball, give us the directions for just plain old fruit. you have a fruit setting, with several different buttons to push that must mean there are options, and you won't share them in your book or your website.......could I just can peaches please??????

For small batch canning, this is one of the best inventions since the automatic bread maker. I'm an intermediate canner, and I still use my large canning pot and rack when making big batches of jam. However, this canning system is perfect for the beginner-- and works well for advanced canners. Just understand one very important thing--you can't make big batches. I've read unfavorable reviews complaining about that, but just understand it is what it is! Just go to the Fresh Preserving website, where you will find a chart that tells you how many of which size jars you can make, at a time. I can make 4 pints, and that's okay.

Moving past that obstacle, I like that I can insert my jars, add some water, and press a button, and hear a beep when my jars are sterilized. I also own the Auto Jam Maker, but even if making jam the conventional way, just fill your jars, insert into the autocanner and press a few buttons. It beeps when your product is canned. I've made bread and butter pickles, salsa and traditional jams. By the way, I use Ball canning mixes, and they are awesome.

Another complaint people have is that you have to use "their" recipes. Well, yes and no. When I go to the fresh preserving website, there are lots of recipes to choose from. I've adapted some of them without problems. I think it's a liability issue, so that people follow safe canning rules. You just have to understand that this is not an pressure canner. You can't can low-acid products, like meats. Period. End of discussion. I know this product seems a bit expensive, but it's a great "gadget". If you can save your pennies, and want to get into the world of canning-- you will love this Automatic Home Canning System.

I got this for your birthday, at my request. I only do small batches and the recipes do not limit me at all. I do not have the time or desire to work with a stock pot and boiling water, timing, etc. associated with "stock pot" water bath canning in my kitchen for the small batches I had always desired to do. This allows me to "set it and come back and get it." Allows me to can all my local fruits (peaches are my favorite), jams and jellies to my heart's desire. The Ball Test Kitchen will respond to more recipes and ways to use this device. It has been a very big seller in our area and every store that has sold them sold out pretty quickly this spring. Thank you "Ball" for giving me something worth having in my kitchen and so easy, anyone can use it.

P.S. I also was able to use a coupon at my local kitchen store around Mother's Day, bring my price to $250. I have the Ball Jam & Jelly Maker also and LOVE that too.
