Review
Having spent his youth in London, that's where he returns to examine the pathhis life took. He's taken on an assignment there for his government job in computer security and combines that time with reconnecting with the love of his life.
Like a little jewelry box, there are gems of prose that stay with you:
"London lets you define it, no matter how minute or transitory the time is that you spent there. You enter the city and at once you have affected it.You add to it. You weigh it down."
"... I learned to see people's moods and general sense of disposition as if each carried a large cartoonspeech bubble next to his or her head. I could simply look up and readit. They signaled so visibly and loudly that I was surprised that people could function with so much distraction."
"A man leans his headbackward to drink the last drop of liquid from his glass and part of his hair falls backward exposing the huge bald spot that he hadmeticulously covered before going out. The piece of hair, like a blackflag, waves in the breeze alerting everyone of the man's vanity."
This is a wonderful book. The reader gets a real feel for the characters, their foibles and virtues. Don't miss this beautifully written tripthrough one man's memories. "

"The primary plots [of Pisgah Road] sing with nostalgia and regret, beautifully capturing the narrator's struggles with his own vulnerability. The author's touch is light as his characters deny their feelings, to themselves and to one another, until the right circumstances finally allow them to speak. But even as it presents such scenes, the story challenges the idea that people are ever handed the perfect moments to create the lives they want. A capable portrait of grief, longing, and second chances."-- Kirkus Reviews

Possibly the best parts of this excellent story are at the beginning of the book; where we are introduced to the circumstances that made this young man to take that sentimental trip to London. In those pages, one reads a remarkably touching dialog between a son and his mother; and how a seemingly disinterested father makes that fateful London trip possible for his son.
A must read from a new author, whose previous works include the novel A Dark Sunny Afternoon and his short story, Tell Me More, appeared in the Anthology of Short Stories as part of Reading Corner Series.
The theme of the novel is one of choices and those choices having consequences. Marty has made choices; Marty’s parents have made choices; Marty’s friends have made choices. Some of those choices were very poor, but most were more nuanced. People make choices in life based on what they think is a proper pathway. Choices whose outcomes one regrets weren’t necessarily poor choices in the event.
What most resonates with me from “Pisgah Road” is the power of memories. Marty has a lot of memories of a period of his life spent in London, so he returns to revisit a decade later. As happens in life, some places stay the same, but the people are different and circumstances are seen through a different lens.
The novel changes timeframes repeatedly. I was struck by the author’s technical expertise in helping the reader keep track of what was contemporaneous versus in recollection.
“Pisgah Road” has several plot threads. There’s a thread about Marty’s present-day career that I didn’t find especially realistic or compelling; I’m not sure the novel needed that. But that’s a quibble. The novel develops interesting, multi-dimensional characters who, befitting the theme of the novel, I’m likely to remember long after putting it down.
I was charmed by the main character's innocence and honesty. Some of my favorite parts were the tender moments between mother and adult son-- her wish to reveal her secret to him-- and such a beautiful secret it was. There were life lessons to be learned from his mother, and his father separately. Amouzegar does a lovely job reminding us to live a life with no regrets by speaking and acting from the heart. Well done. I look forward to more.
