When I first went to use it after fully charging, I found that it continued to go to my home page from the desktop and tell me that Chrome had not shut down correctly; when that was clicked, it would immediately go back to the sign on page. It did this several times and I was starting to think I'd have to return this machine I'd been looking forward to testing out. It turned out that it had shipped with an older version of the OS installed, since once I checked the version and did a manual upgrade, things started working as they should.
-The build quality is what I'd consider fair to good. This is a sub $250 laptop.
I've seen a lot of reviewers mention that the screen quality could be better, and I suppose it could be, but I find it more than adequate. The colors seem bright, and viewing video content here works very well for me. Not being an audiophile, I find the larger, top facing speakers to be among the better ones I've heard on a laptop.
- I find the keyboard very comfortable to type on. I usually add a wireless keyboard and mouse to any laptop I use, but only needed to add a mouse this time, as I find using this keyboard enjoyable.
- I don't think the track pad is bad, but I don't have a lot of experience with them and just prefer the simplicity of a wireless mouse.
- battery life is pretty decent; I'm getting anywhere from 7 to 7.5 hrs this first couple of weeks. That is with light to mod.browsing and video playback and brightness at about 40%.
- I would have liked an additional usb 3.0 port, but again, keeping the cost down was a prime concern, I suppose.
- it has quick boot up. You're ready to start doing what you want in seconds.
- I'd have preferred it if it was fanless, but the fan is very quiet and I think it was needed with the better Celeron chip that this shipped with.
- some folks like the kind of funky patterned outer plastic, but I'm not a big fan. This may just make keeping the white case clean a bit harder.
- I'm not overly impressed with the 720p camera, but hopefully it'll prove adequate for video chats.
By far the biggest thing I consider a major flaw with this laptop is the small, flimsy looking charger and charge port, which looks more suitable for a 10 year old low price cell phone than a new computer. It looks like this may be the first thing to fail, but I hope using it with care, that won't be the case.
As the time gets closer to when the play store should be opening up the use of Android apps on Chromebooks, I believe this rating my get closer to 5 stars... certainly 4.5 or 4.75 anyway!
All told, I'm very happy with this purchase and hope to have it working well for a long time to come.
Update-2/20/19: I purchased a second of these Chromebooks, 'used-like new', and it arrived in pristine condition. After several weeks, it's working like our new one did. No problems, and no hassles with Microsoft security issues.
The touchpad is one of the best that I have used. Sometimes the chromebook seems to have issues with a three finger touch, but this may be the palm rejection working on the device. When I say issues, I mean that if you try to tap with three fingers too lightly, it may not register as a three finger tap. The keyboard is one of the most enjoyable keyboards that I have used. All of the keys are crisp when pushed down, and have very little movement when they are depressed. It seems as though little specs of dust and whatnot may get under the keyboard through time, but it should be easy to replace if anything goes wrong. My only complaint about the keyboard is that if you press the spacebar too far down and too far either to the right or the left, the resistance of the spacebar against the walls that surround it may be too much to prevent an electrical activation even though the spacebar clicks.
The speakers are generally plenty loud and do give decent stereo effect, but don't expect these to be a bass cannon. They are roughly the same speakers that are in the acer c720, but they are now oriented upwards.
The camera is roughly mediocre. It will be fine for video chatting, but it is not a dslr.
The battery life is something that seems to be either a good or an average. Depending on the brightness and how conservative you are with opening demanding tabs, you can easily push the chromebook to somewhere in the range of 9 to 10 hours of battery life. When you start doing things that are more intensive on the chromebook like netflix watching and youtube watching, the number quickly drops to the range of five to six hours with a medium brightness. Without doing a full rundown on the chromebook, I would think that it will get somewhere in the range of 4 to 5 hours with maximum brightness.
The build quality of the chromebook seems like it is a high quality even though the body of the chromebook creaks when it is moved around. There doesn't appear to be any flex in the body of the chromebook, and the comparatively higher weight to other chormebooks makes this one feel more durable. So far I have noticed no scratches in mine and believe that it will remain this way because the texture on the surface of the chromebook prevents scratches from things like sand when placed on a flat service.
The performance of the chromebook is very good, and it is a near must to get the 4gb of ram. There is next to no reloading of pages even when there are more than thirty pages open at a time. On this note, even though this is running on the new broadwell chips, don't expect any kind of cpu or gpu graphical powerhouse as of yet. When running crouton on this chromebook with trusty xfce (14.04) I was only able to achieve roughly 20 to 30 fps in games like tf2 with severe input lag. Other games were worse. The only game that I found to truly run well would be costume quest. Take this with a grain of salt because the drivers are not properly optimized yet, and this is being dual booted ontop of chrome, meaning that all graphics and sound still has to feed through the chromeos running. This greatly slows everything down. If you want to run linux on this chromebook, the 4gb of ram is a necessity. Keep in mind that the 16/32gb ssd is going to be very limiting, especially if you want to download large applications, so you may want to get a quick sd card. You can also upgrade the ssd with a standard m.2 sata drive, and there are on warranty stickers that you will void adding this m.2 into the chromebook.
Other than that, everything else has been a joy. I wish there were more offline applications in chromeos, but that will come with time. If you want to get this as a game device (aside from small indie games on linux) you are going to be disappointed. Final notes: it is a good chromebook for the person that knows that this is the size that they want. There are small quirks to the device and performance may be overstated compared to the advertised specifications when running linux.
