1.0 out of 5 stars Another Keyboard Bites the Dust, October 13, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Another keyboard bites the dust. This one lasted just slightly over two months before becoming useless. At first, it worked like a charm. Lightweight, responsive keys, easy comnectivity, and holds a charge forever. Then a few days ago, I set it up like usual on my desk at work. But this time the entire bottom row of keys were unresponsive and dead as a doornail. The space bar as well. I always carried it in the handy pouch to protect it. But, whatever. Poor quality rears its ugly head once more. I am zero for two in just three months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the real facts on nutrition!, September 6, 2014

Excellent analysis of more than a century of nutrition "research" and of the politics that have resulted in the sad state of official nutrition policy today. Great companion piece to Gary Taubes' "Good Calories, Bad Calories".

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad quality keyboard., August 5, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Loved it for two weeks. Then the W key stopped working. Unfortunately, I know a lot of words that contain the letter W. Oh, and one of the arrow cursor keys popped off on the same day (today) and won't snap back on. Great idea. Really bad quality.

But, on a brighter note, the fake leather cover itself is quite attractive in the light blue color. But I bought it for the keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rationale for Secession and Civil War Told Through Their Own Words, June 7, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is an important addition to the vast historical literature on the whys and wherefores of the Civil War, told mostly through the perspective of the Southern slaveholding elite, themselves, through their own writings, speeches, and editorials. That perspective is well balanced by Dr. Levine through contrasting words and actions from non-slaveholding Whites, slaves and Black freemen, and Union political and military leaders as well. Dr. levine's focus is primarily how the secessionists thought about themselves and their purpose in trying to maintain their economic and social systems at all costs and how they wound up destroying both in the process. The concluding chapter, sadly, summarizes the aftermath of the Civil War and the Fall of the House of Dixie and how after an initial attempt at granting full civil, economic, and social rights to former slaves and Black people in general, that effort was walked back and subverted by the reemergence of the Southern Elite and Northern business interests that cared little about human rights and only about profiting off the backs of others' labors.

2.0 out of 5 stars Something major is missing from this new edition: an entire Middle Eastern Nation, May 16, 2014
I have the original edition of this book (1979, I think) and it does, indeed, contain a chapter on Israel. I happen to live this cookbook and many of the recipes have become staples for me. But recently when I saw a new printing of the book with a new cover, the entire chapter on Israel was cut, as if it was not part of the "complete" Middle East. This is truly an insult, and I can only assume it to have been a marketing decision by a new publisher that is afraid it wouldn't sell among other Middle Easterners if it acknowledged the existence and contributions of Israel to the area's cuisines. As a result if this clearly political decision I have to downgrade my review of this otherwise fine cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars What it's like to have to abandon one language for a new one, April 30, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This should be read by teachers who teach students who have immigrated from non-English-speaking countries. It is about the long, difficult, and psychologically difficult journey into a new language, new culture, new way of seeing the world that come with learning a new language as an older child or adult. I think after having read this, I understand my parents better, how difficult it must have been to be refugees trying to adapt into a completely alien language and culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy umbrella-and sturdy!, June 7, 2013

I was looking for a small, auto open and close umbrella that would also be sturdy. Very pleased with this brand as it's lived up to my needs. It's also mighty pretty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money if you have a phone case, April 2, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I needed an adapter for my new iPhone 5 to use it with my Sony Dream Machine dock's 30-pin connector. I also happen to have a snap-on case for the phone. As others have reported, this adapter is utterly useless with most iPhone 5 cases: the pin is much too short. Total waste of $25. At least I didn't pay $29 at the Apple Store. So, if your iPhone 5 is in a case, you'll need the adapter that has a short cord. It's awkward to use as you can't stand your phone up in the dock, but it does work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired murder mystery for all those who heart NYC, November 24, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Freeze Frame (Kindle Edition)
This intricate and fast-paced mystery of murder in high places is also a delightful romp through the landmarks of New York City. Anyone who loves the city and has spent time here will get a kick out of heroine Lorna Raven's traipse through precincts well known and not so well known (except to us life-long denizens of the Big Apple) as she tries to unravel the twists and turns of nefarious doings among the rich and famous and politically well connected. Inspired fun with well defined, quirky characters who ring true to life. Lorna's junk food passions will also put a smile on the lips of anyone who ever lusted after the world's best cheeseburger and fries. Stir up a Manhattan, kick back, and curl up for a very fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion for the Paperwhite, November 17, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Paperwhite is my fourth Kindle e-reader, and I'm loving it. I love the built-in light and touch screen. I have always been devoted to Oberon Design for my Kindle covers, but for the Paperwhite I decided to go with the cover Amazon specifically designed for it. And I'm very glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised by what a perfect companion this cover is for Paperwhite. Right off the bat, let me point out that this cover won't win any prizes for style, and it has very little of the pizzazz that a hand-tooled Oberon leather cover has. But the Paperwhite Cover wins hands down for function and ergonomics. I am convinced that whoever designed this cover took his/her inspiration from Apple's new Smartcase design for the iPad. What I love about this: First, the case is hardly bigger than the Paperwhite itself. The Paperwhite snaps neatly into what is a rigid plastic shell, which holds the unit very securely. Second, when you are reading the Paperwhite with the cover folded back (and the cover folds back all the way and stays nice and flat), all you see is a very thin rim of color surrounding the bezel around the screen. It is very, very unobtrusive. Like the Apple Smartcase, the cover has a magnet that puts the unit to sleep when closed and wakes it up when opened. Brilliant! No more fumbling with tiny switches. The Paperwhite in its closed case is downright tiny and will slip into almost any sized purse. It is very comfortable he'd in one hand, and you can hold it both the the cover folded entirely back or with the cover open like a book. Either way it is lightweight and comfy. The "leather" of the leather cover is really just a thin veneer over rigid plastic, and the colors are okay (I have it in purple, which is my color this year). The cover could be surfaced just as easily with fabric in different more colorful designs, frankly. Amazon should consider making more of a fashion statement with this cover by offering some splashy designs. But that is a quibble. This really is a terrific product.
