5.0 out of 5 stars Great - Protein from animal sources, no wheat gluten, no soy, no grains, August 22, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The protein in this food comes from animal sources (the peas would contribute some, as well, but most comes from animal sources). No soy. No wheat gluten. That’s great and, to me, worth paying more for.

There are no grains, so if your dog has an allergy to any of the grains, this makes Solid Gold Leaping Waters Holistic Grain Free Wet Dog food a safe food. There is potato starch, which seems to have been included as a cheap source of calories. I wish they had used more peas, or perhaps pumpkin, which would contribute more nutrients than the processed potato starch. Even whole potatoes would be better. I almost dropped one star from my rating because of this, but the very high quality of the protein sources makes me still give this 5 stars.

The salmon and fish oil give this omega-3s, which are important for health.

Overall, a high quality product that can be eaten by dogs with grain allergies.

The feeding instructions are: “Feed 2-4 times a day, offering small portions eaten within a couple of minutes. Remove any uneaten food after 5 minutes and adjust portions at the next feeding accordingly.” I would note the significance of removing uneaten food after 5 minutes as I found the pellets were already starting to fall apart and sink within that time period. This could easily cause pollution in the tank. Pellets of some other quality brands do not fall apart so easily.

I’m giving these 3 stars rather than 1 or 2 because they are adequate, but I recommend Hikari, ZooMed, and/or Omega One instead. These all offer top notch nutrition. Personally, I like to feed at least 2 of these in alternate feedings. I suggest The Turtle Room’s article on Commercial Turtle Foods: Benefits/Uses, Staples/Supplements for details.

I will upload a picture of these pellets so you can see the size.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not work on Kindle, even though Amazon offers to send it to your Kindle, August 21, 2016

Although Amazon offers the option to send this to your Kindle, it won't play on a Kindle.

Tile Slim - Phone Finder. Wallet Finder. Item Finder - 1-Pack
Tile Slim - Phone Finder. Wallet Finder. Item Finder - 1-Pack

4.0 out of 5 stars Offers features other “finders” don't have, but there are things you should know, August 19, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
One great feature of this “finder” is that it can make your phone ring, even if the phone is set to silence. The Tile itself can be triggered to emit a 90 decibel tune (reminds me of Cube World, if you know that toy).

The basics, from the Tile website, “Attach a Tile to an item and locate it by sound when it’s close but out of sight. If you still can’t find your Tiled item, use the Tile app to see its last known location on a map, or leverage the Tile community to find it for you.”

The Community Find feature of the app uses the Tile app running on other peoples’ devices locate your phone and notify you (it does NOT notify them) if you are too far from the Tile to be within Bluetooth range, but they are within range. Obviously, as the Tile becomes more popular, and I expect that it will, this becomes more useful. As the Tile website explains, “If your Tile is out of Bluetooth range, you can use Last Place Seen to see where it was last seen on the map, or you can mark your Tile as lost and it will allow your Tile to be discovered by the community. When anyone running the app comes within Bluetooth range of your Tile, you will receive an alert notifying you of the location of your Tile.”

The battery will run out in about 1 year! You can sign up to have a replacement Tile sent to you a year after you initialize your Tile. The replacement cost is reduced this way. So, keep in mind that you are only paying for 1 year of usefulness when you buy a Tile. The Tile website touts this as meaning the Tile is maintenance free, since you don’t need to (indeed, can’t) replace the battery. I find the inability to replace the battery to be a negative, not a positive as they claim.

For some reason, you have to pay extra and order the adhesive for this separately. I think that should be included. I just went to check on the cost of the adhesive but can’t find it on the Tile website. Apparently you can “add” it to an order, but if you bought your Tile elsewhere, then??? I do wish the Tile Slim had a hole in it like the original version, as I would much prefer to use that to attach this to things.

The instructions included in the box are pretty basic. More info would be useful.

Right now, this is a very good product. I expect it to get better and cheaper quickly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Auto feedback control is nice, August 19, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a nice, typical hand mixer with dough hooks. I like the auto feedback control feature, in which the mixer automatically boosts power when needed. Of course, with 10 speeds, you have a lot of control over power yourself. The two together allow for precision in mixing.

I can only offer 4 stars, as reliability is very important and this is a new product, so that can’t be judged. The Cuisinart mixers I’ve had have lasted a long time, but cost more and didn’t include dough hooks.

Creating Freedom: The Lottery of Birth, the Illusion of Consent, and the Fight for Our Future
Creating Freedom: The Lottery of Birth, the Illusion of Consent, and the Fight for Our Future
by Raoul Martinez
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $20.62

4.0 out of 5 stars Good synthesis, but doesn’t stand well alone, August 18, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I found the points that Martinez is trying to make to be mainly valid and very worthy of thought and conversation, but I have encountered these topics covered better elsewhere. Martinez does cover a broad array of topics, so you would have to read several other books to cover the same territory, but since these other authors have more credibility and do a better job, I would suggest going elsewhere. Still, I’ll give Martinez some credit for bringing everything together. It’s not a bad book, it’s just not the best, either.

Early on in the book, Martinez offers a good summary of the main point: “We may well be less free than we like to think, but only through understanding the freedom we lack can we enhance the freedom we possess. Ignorance of our limitations leaves us vulnerable to those able to exploit them. Facing up to the limits on our freedom explodes a number of persistent myths – myths surrounding individual responsibility, justice, political democracy and the market. Some of these myths persist because they advance the interests of those in power; others because they flatter us, offering false comfort. All come at a price. The way we think about freedom shapes our view of the present and our vision of the future… But not all conceptions of freedom are created equal. Each is based on assumptions about the world, some of which fly in the face of evidence and logic… The problem is that, by the time we have developed the intelligence necessary to contemplate our own identity, we are already very much in possession of one. How we think about ourselves and the world around us will already be framed by the conditioning we have received up to that point.” There is excellent evidence to support this, and Martinez offers coverage of that. But, again, others have done better, each in their own area of expertise.

I suggest Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them, by Joshua Greene; The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, by Steven Pinker; The Great Suppression: Voting Rights, Corporate Cash, and the Conservative Assault on Democracy, by Zachary Roth; Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World, by Bill Nye; and Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth, by Ed Diener.

Creating Freedom is a great addition to these books, but I don’t recommend it on its own. The relationships between these topics are well presented in Creating Freedom, but things are too simplified for me to accept them with what is presented in just this one book. Supplemented with those other books I suggest, I do indeed, agree with most of what Martinez presents here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great charger but check out Belkin MIXIT Metallic Charger, August 18, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This charger is great, but, at least as I write this, it costs the same as the better Belkin MIXIT Metallic USB Home and Wall Charger for Apple and Android devices (2.4 Amp / 5 Watt). Both are 2.4 Amp, which offers faster charging. Both offer surge protection (with a $2500 warrantee), which means you can travel without needing a surge protector for your phone. But, the MIXIT also offers an Interchangeable Plug Design, which means that “Individual plugs for other regions are sold separately, and prevent the need to buy expensive all-in-one chargers, adapters, or country-specific chargers that you can't use at home.” This does mean that the MIXIT extends slightly more from the outlet than this charger does, but the MIXIT also has the very nice feature of having the prongs fold down. This helps protect the prongs when traveling, and since you are likely to travel with your phone, this is a useful feature.

Overall, if the price is the same, as it is right now, I recommend the MIXIT version that Belkin offers. If this charger happens to be cheaper as you read this review, then base your decision on how much the MIXIT’s extra features mean to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars AmazonBasics is a great option – this comes with a nice velcro-type ministrap, August 15, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I find AmazonBasics and Belkin to offer quality cables at a more reasonable price than Apple and some others. I’ve never had a problem with either brand and would pick between them based on price.

I particularly like the braided cables that AmazonBasics offers. This cable also came with a nice little Velcro-type ministrap attached that can secure the cable in a coil (and is removable, if you don’t like it).

AmazonBasics Display Port to VGA adapter
AmazonBasics Display Port to VGA adapter
Price: $15.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive choice IF you don’t need high resolution, August 15, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This AmazonBasics adapter does what I need it to do, but if you need a high resolution, this is not your adapter. The resolution is listed on the webpage as up to 1024 X 768. Here’s what is says, “Connects DP-equipped computer/graphics card to VGA display (monitor or projector); High-definition video streaming with resolutions up to 1024x768.”

The connections are secure and the cable itself is thick yet very pliable. Great for tighter spots. Does what it should without costing too much. If you don’t need a higher resolution, this will save you money.

Wild Things, Wild Places: Adventurous Tales of Wildlife and Conservation on Planet Earth
Wild Things, Wild Places: Adventurous Tales of Wildlife and Conservation on Planet Earth
by Jane Alexander
Edition: Hardcover
Price: $21.71

4.0 out of 5 stars Personal overview of conservation, August 15, 2016
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book fills a particular niche of the conservation book area – if you are looking for a personal account that covers a vast array of conservation issues, then this is your book. I found it unique in this respect. Most books that cover nearly the whole span of wildlife conservation do not have the personal travelogue style of this book. Alexander’s book is definitely about breadth, not depth, in its coverage of issues, but the memoir style means it also focuses on specific moments and people.

The cultures of the areas that Alexander visits also make up a significant portion of the book, and I enjoyed this.

This book would be a great gift to raise the awareness of wildlife conservation issues, while offering an interesting travelogue to those who maybe haven’t given the topic much thought.
