5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Telling of a Honeymoon Like No Other, January 7, 2016
Josh and Sutay Berman's was a most unconventional honeymoon. They traveled around the world for a couple of years, doing "good works" in developing countries while solidifying their loving relationship. Pakistan, India and West Africa were the main stops on their journey. "Crocodile Love" documents the experiences, the adventures and the insights they gained along the way. This fast-moving book about slow travel is captivating.

4.0 out of 5 stars More on "America's Best Idea", December 23, 2015
As Ken Burns so famously wrote, our national parks are "America's best idea." This book celebrates that idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instructive & Scary Home-Finding Experience, October 6, 2015
Jules Older is one of the smartest people and one of the best writers. But his tale makes me grateful to own a home in a place I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Savoring "Kissed by a Fox", December 1, 2012
I've been nibbling at and savoring this book for several weeks. It's a delicious indulgence full of insight about the relationship between humans and nature, personal experiences, epiphanies, learned references and elegant, literate prose. Like a sinfully rich dessert, I can only manage a little at a time. I read a section, then put it down till I've digested it and am ready for the next. What a wonderful book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Guide for Climbers & Others, June 6, 2010
I don't have a young child anymore, but if I did, I'd want this book because it includes not only well-researched and achievable routes but also other useful information for any family trip. The climbing information is very clear and includes everything I imagine parents would want to know: How easy each climbing area is to reach. What the approach is like. Type of rock. What gear that is needed. The recommended age range. Camping options. Whether there is cell service. Whether dogs are permitted. Even (should an emergency arise) the location of the nearest hospital. I also like her assessment of the pros and cons of each climbing area. These might include ease or difficulty of the approach; accessibility; crowds; convenient camping or not. And of course, there is detailed information on each climbing route. For any vacationing family, the additional travel tips are great -- perhaps if the weather is not conducive for family climbing, in case youngsters want a break from climbing, to accommodate any non-climbers in the family or as add-ons while a family is in the vicinity of a recommended climbing area. Hechtel has scouted out where to buy groceries and supplies if camping, hotels/motels if not camping, restaurants and "What Else Can We Do That's Fun?"

4.0 out of 5 stars New View of Chinese-American Relations, March 28, 2010
No, not international politics, but family relations when American and Chinese cultures come together by virtue of marriage. Deftly told in fiction form. An award-winner -- and it's easy to understand why.

Brothers on the Bashkaus: A Siberian Paddling Adventure
Brothers on the Bashkaus: A Siberian Paddling Adventure
by Eugene Buchanan
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Great River Yarn -- But True!, January 26, 2008
My husband and I attended Eugene Buchanan's talk and slide show about this gripping river adventure and just had to buy the book. He wrote it a number of years after the trip, but it was such a defining experience that he wrote it with such immediacy that it seems as if he had just returned from the river. He talked about it the same way. Having heard him speak and seen his slides, I knew how the story ended (the rafters all lived!), but I still found every page to be full of river adventures and cultural insights. We both read this and were taken by it. Since our book tastes are generally as different as Jack Spratt and his wife's about food -- and you can consider this a major recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Insights into the Food Indsutry, April 27, 2007
I bought this book after hearing Kimberly Stewart speak a couple of months ago, and I've now read it through. There's so much useful, provacative and enlightening information that I've read it a bit at a time so that it could sink in. What an eye-opener for anyone who shops for food. The book essentially is a compare and contrast study on "what the label says" and "what the label means." Her explanations are well researched, her conclusions are smart and the "Shopping Lists" at the end are useful for every trip to the supermarket. I've photocopied them and keep them in my purse.
