Simple yet charming animated film from Ireland about a boy whose sister is a Selkie and must be returned to the sea in order to survive. I thought the story was absorbing and well worth watching.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Boy Dying of ALS Finds Friends Online, September 14, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
A young adult book tells the story of a young man who is dying of ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The boy is 17 and is too paralyzed to attend school. He uses the internet and teen chat rooms to make friends especially one friend in particular. His longing is to find someone who doesn't pity him but make his life more meaningful. While I really was intrigued by the this book's premise and story, I wasn't so thrilled by the way it was written or played out. It might be due to translation from Japanese. The boy uses haiku poetry to tell his story and short passages that he writes in the chat rooms. I felt guilty because I didn't feel more than I did but the book didn't draw me in as I thought it should. Other readers may feel differently and it could definitely find an audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A VietCong Comes To America, September 14, 2015
This review is from: The Sympathizer (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Droll, clever novel about a VietCong spy who decides to go all the way and evacuate Saigon with many others and venture to the evil United States of America. There, mostly within his head, he attempts to reconcile his mission, his beliefs and values, against his experience and acceptance in the new land that he is making his home. The novel introduces us to the man, who is spying on top level generals in the South Vietnamese Army and is put on a list with other for safe passage to Los Angeles. Still trying to hold on to his mission in the US is complicated when so far away and the communications aren't very easy to reconcile. Life in America does have its charms too so how much can he enjoy it and get away with living a good life here? The protagonist struggles and eventually blends into his new community but it isn't always easy. The novel loses its edge about three quarters of the way through but still it is quite amusing and warm hearted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Three Soldiers Struggle With Afghanistan, September 14, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I expected a lot more from this book than I got from it. The three protagonists have returned from Afghanistan in different situations and have different stories, but they are detached from themselves and their lives and I felt that way towards them. None of the characters were ones that I felt connected to nor was I attached to them enough to feel curiosity about what would happen to them and how they would turn out. Disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars On Ok Young Adult Biography of Malcolm X, September 14, 2015
This review is from: X: A Novel (Hardcover)
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a young adult book written about the young life of Malcolm X by his daughter Ilyasah Shabazz with Kekla Magoon. I wanted to like this book more than I did and was disappointed that I didn't. The book covers the young life of Malcolm X, his family life, the loss of his mother to mental illness, the assumed murder of his father by Black Legion, and outgrowth of the KKK located in Michigan and the North and Mid-West. The book's story moves up to Malcolm's sentence in prison and the discovery of Islam. While I am interested in Malcolm X's life and love the book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, this book soft pedals all details of his life and seems to emphasize "readability", downplaying violence and making the life of Malcolm X have less impact and causing confusion. Too many words emphasizing sound and movement seem ridiculous and don't have a place in the story. It is common in books that want a book to be more "readable" on a scale by Fry. The sentences are short and the words are "easy". But using shorter, "easier" words doesn't mean that the book is more comprehensible and enjoyable to read. It often has the opposite effect. Even a young adult biography of Malcolm X should be more hard hitting and clear. Readers can take it, respect it and enjoy it. This book does too much of a soft shoe to have an impact.

New Old World: An Indian Journalist Discovers the Changing Face of Europe
New Old World: An Indian Journalist Discovers the Changing Face of Europe
by Pallavi Aiyar

4.0 out of 5 stars An Indian Observing Modern Europe, September 14, 2015
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Pallavi Aiyar is a journalist from India. Moving to Brussels in 2009, she decided to write a journalistic book about her experience as an Indian in Europe. She meets with other immigrants, Indian, Muslim, other ethnic groups and countries and how they all struggle to make ends meet and fulfill their dreams in Europe. My favorite passages are about Belgium which I hadn't known was a fairly new country. The Flemish and French speaking people struggle to accommodate newer immigrants who are badly needed but also badly treated. The idea of Europe as a country is theoretical rather than practical in many ways and the idea keeps falling apart little by little. This book wasn't difficult to read and the interactions with residents provided amusements and insight. I really admired this book and the author.
