5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, February 1, 2007
This review is from: Corinne Bailey Rae (Audio CD)
"Summer came like cinnamon, so sweet, little girls double-dutch on the concrete". Yea! Put your records on! Track 3 is a radio hit, and so lyrical. Check out the chorus at :50. Great groove, great harmonies.

A CD full of excellent, original songs. Great vocals, great arrangments, great harmonies. Driving grooves.

"Till it Happens to You" is another notable track (4). Nice vocals and harmonies, jazz voicings on the elec. piano. "Breathless" is also excellent. "I'd Like To" (track 9) is pure summer fun.

The group is excellent live. In 2006 they toured with a full band - drums/bass/guitar/keyboards/2 backup singers + Corine. And in a small venue. A must see.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your $$, September 25, 2006
This review is from: Loose (Audio CD)
This is the worst CD I've heard in a long time.

The music (if you can call it that) is extremely repetitive. Program a drum machine and repeat the same three chords for the entire song. Quite a formula. Must be nice to have a major label behind you.

Nelly has a nice voice though. I'd advise her to dump her band and her song writer(s).

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Holiday Jazz, December 19, 2005

A nice mix of swing and ballads.

Great vocals and backing instrumentation,

with a few solos. Jazz that will appeal

to a wide audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Original Electric-Acoustic Rock, December 14, 2005
This review is from: Back To Me (Audio CD)
Great lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation.

Clean vocals with pleasing harmonies, nice mix

acoustic and electric guitar. Colin Cripps on

electric guitar has some real nice fills and solos.

The entire CD is excellent.

"In State" really rocks, as does "Old Time Sake".

5.0 out of 5 stars Her Best Work Ever, December 12, 2005
This review is from: C'mon, C'mon (Audio CD)
I listen to this one over and over, from start to finish.
It starts out with a couple of electric radio hits
("Steve McQueen" and "Soak up the Sun").
These tunes are catchy, with nice vocal harmonies
and very good instrumentation.

However, what I like best about this CD is the deep tracks.
"Abilene", "It's Only Love", and "Weather Channel" have a
more acoustic instrumentation, and the lyrics and vocals
are touching and poetic.

"Weather Channel" is a very nice, mellow track.
Nice finger-picked acoustic guitar work here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plastic Rock for the Masses, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Breakaway (Audio CD)
The first three tracks are good songs, but the rest is throw-away.

The CD is largely vocally oriented. The vocals are polished
and well produced on the first three songs, with nice
harmonies. However, the instrumentation is rather basic
and not real interesting. Beyond the first tree tracks,
the tracks are not that well produced, leaving a piercing,
grating sound to the lead vocals.

If you're an mp3 fan, just buy the first 3 songs.

If you looking for female vocalists with substance,
check out Kathleen Edwards or Sheryl Crow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Blues, December 10, 2005
This review is from: Midnight Blue (Audio CD)
Classic blues with Stanley Turrentine on sax.
Of particular note, "Soul Lament", with Burrell playing
solo guitar. "Midnight Blue", a nice, upbeat number.
Burrell has a very nice chord solo on
"Bee Baby, Ain't I Good To You".
Both Burrell and Turrentine really cook on the
up tempo numbers "Saturday Night Blues" and "Kenny's Sound".

5.0 out of 5 stars Swingin' Modern Big Band!, December 8, 2005
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 36 (Audio CD)
Brilliant arrangements performed by master musicians!
Exciting yet restrained, with tight counterpoint between
the soloists and the instrumental chorus. Plenty of
Gerry on sax, but lots of other instruments are featured
on solos. I hear something new every time I listen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Harmonies, In a Light Acoustic Mix, December 2, 2005
This review is from: Wildflower (Audio CD)
Nice light acoustic tunes with an excellent string section.

Very nice harmonies in the first five tracks.

A couple of up-tempo tunes, also (tracks 6 and 8).

Lifetimes has a great groove.

Overall very good.
