2.0 out of 5 stars A clean miss, July 13, 2016

This review is from: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (DVD)
Star Wars fan from way back...in fact one of the first memories was seeing the original in the theater. IV-V-VI were decent, I-II-III at least had a good backstory. With so much that has been written about the Star Wars universe, the fact that Disney completely took the franchise off the rails and set it on a new, so-far incredibly less interesting direction is beyond me. Mara who? Ben Skywalker who? Solo checks out (no real surprise based on all of the complaints down the years from Mr. Ford re: the role and the franchise). The fact that everyone who picks up a lightsaber for the first time can wield it as well as a Sith lord? So many holes in this film. As much respect as I have for the original cast, it very much felt like they were walking through their lines. As for the force awakening...more like the writers were working on a dual dose of Xanax and Ambien. Finally, although I have respect for J.J. Abrams, being associated with the destruction of two cherished childhood sci-fi universes??? Will the story improve? Not according to the books currently out to support the 'new' timeline.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent show, terrible copy- skips by the hundreds..., May 17, 2016

This review is from: Spenser for Hire: Season 3 (DVD)
Excellent show, terrible copy. One would think that after making fans wait for so long they would create a product that works without skipping hundreds of times in a single episode. Watched Seasons 1 and 2 on the same player without incident. Since at least one other reviewer had the same issue, it's not the player but rather the product...

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a watch., November 4, 2015
This review is from: Alien Outpost (DVD)
Decent film. Relatively low budget, but doesn't really feel like it. Action sequences are frequent and well done. Better than many other big budget flicks that don't really capture the moment or the intimacy of those in it. Definitely worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cliffhanger ending but worthwhile watch, October 22, 2015
This review is from: Lost For Words (DVD)
Overall a good movie. As one of the previous reviewers notes, there is a slow buildup in this movie. Ultimately the cinematography was good, the characters, while they could have been fleshed out a bit more, were believable and sympathetic. Definitely worth a watch. However, the cliffhanger ending was not a good plot move and I would imagine left most viewers (including this one) cold and disappointed. While not all life is about sunsets and happy endings, this is one movie that actually needed it. Four stars instead of five for the slight lack of character development and ending. Good supporting cast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Corny but fun romp, February 9, 2015

Interesting premise, but definitely a bit corny. Wasn't familiar with this character, but definitely a Dr. Strange feel to it. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun film, Greedy Price, February 9, 2015
Having owned the VHS version of this movie for many years, I was excited when it was finally released on DVD. This is a fun movie with Fred Ward as a begrudging action hero who takes on a mystic mantle. But honestly, WHO will really pay $60 for a DVD? That's flat out crazy! 4.5 for the film, 0 for the price. Come on, you can do better!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe..., January 3, 2015
This review is from: Here on Earth Repackaged (DVD)
Hard to believe that this film was this bad. Really all the right elements were there to make this a pretty good, if formulaic movie. For the most part good actors, and a decent plot, but the entire movie felt cliché, and as each scene progressed, felt like a cosmic checklist was being checked off. You want to feel for the characters, but whether it was the director, the depth of the backstory, or the delivery of ho-hum acting, this movie doesn't deliver like it should. Wish I could say this was a gem but...no.

I've been looking for this book since Scholastic messed up the order in grade school. Finally found it. Hoping to pass it on to the next generation.

After seeing the first movie on a plane (and hating it), I really didn't think I would like this one. Surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. Went back and re-watched the Hunger Games with a fresh set of eyes and found myself drawn into the plot. Good series.
