The Novellas of Martha Gellhorn

5.0 out of 5 stars Gellhorn was a superb writer, July 17, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Martha Gellhorn was Hemingway's third wife and a superb writer of her own. She lacks his sparse style; instead, her novellas have the feel of quality in-depth journalism. She wrote excellent, evocative stories you can sink into. Her prose is clear and readable, her storytelling intense. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great webcam, July 17, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this webcam on sale on Amazon Prime day as a replacement for an earlier Logitech model with a torn cord. this webcam was quick and easy to set up -- all I had to do was plug it in. The adjustable picture and microphone work great.

If you have a narrow monitor, you may want to attach it for stability. I use a small piece of double sided mounting tape.

Be very careful of the cord when you swivel the camera to close it. The cord of the model I replaced came loose from the back of the camera for that reason. I notice that this new one is reinforced at the back of the camera -- still, it would be wise to be very careful about the cord because that is a stress point.

by Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Photos of Dubuque in outstanding 30-page preface, October 19, 2015
This is a 270-page hardcover cookbook published in 1994 by the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League. The 30-page preface contains "An Introduction to Dubuque" with descriptive text and around 20 full-color photos of the city's iconic sites.

Photos are by Bob Coyle, and are of the interior of Five Flags Theatre, Washington Park Gazebo, the Fenelon Place Elevator, the Town Clock, the Old Jail, the Dubuque County Courthouse, the Farmer's Market, the Shot Tower, the Dubuque Star Brewery, the Ryan House, the Mathias Ham house, the William M. Black dredge boat, the Arboretum, Julien Dubuque's grave, and a barge on the Mississippi river, as well as a scene of downtown rooftops.

The remainder of the book is a cookbook, containing Appetizers, Salads, Soups, Side dishes, Vegetables, Breads, and Desserts. This book is an excellent piece of Dubuque memorabilia.

With some hesitation, I ordered the large 20-pack of ink for a Canon Pixma (MX series) printer. To my surprise, the ink installed easily and works just fine. This is an economical alternative. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 stylish phones with handy intercom, speakerphone, December 5, 2009
I bought model L402V of this phone Dec 2009 from Sam's Club, for about $50. There are two phones: one a corded base with an answering machine, the other a cordless phone with charger. The packaging had an earth-friendly "green" notice, which I found appealing. The buttons on both phones are comfortable and easy to press.

I did have trouble changing the base to wall mount. The "quick start" guide omitted this issue, and the extended manual contains such tiny images that I had difficulty reading it. When I tried to reverse the clip that holds the phone on a wall-mounted base, it came loose and shot across the room. Luckily, I retrieved it before the cat got it.

Discouragingly, once wall mounted, the phone hangs crooked when the receiver is hung up. I fixed that problem by putting sticky tack behind it (the stretchy stuff you use to hang up posters). Although the manual said it would have to be charged for 24 hours before first use, the cordless phone had enough charge in the battery to try it out.

The phones are slim, stylish, and mainly intuitive to use. One not very intuitive feature is that in order to make a call from the base, you have to press the "speaker" button. With the exception of the intercom feature, they mostly work as if they are separate phones, and their differences can be confusing.

The cordless phone has great audio transmission without static or interference, even in distant parts of the house. We've had trouble inside our house with previous phones. I like that each entry in the phone book can be customized with one of ten ringtones, some of which are really cute. The ringtones apply separately to each phone, so the phones will ring at the same time, using separate melodies.

A disadvantage is that it's hard to see the location of the tiny microphone on the base, and you have to speak very close to the phone when recording a memo or the outgoing message. For this reason, the audio quality of the memos and outgoing messages can be poor. However, the audio quality of the actual phone conversations is very good, and the volume is easy to adjust.

The two separate phonebooks are also a bit annoying. There doesn't seem to be a way to link phonebooks so that each time you save a number it appears in the both the base and the cordless phone. 30 numbers can be saved on each phone. Confusingly, the base will not save an incoming caller's number if it's not in the phonebook, but the cordless will do so.

The font size on the LCD screen of the base makes it easy to see the numbers and names. The base lights up only when active, which (I hope) saves energy. The speakerphone and mute features work well. For those who don't mind figuring out the quirks, this phone combination is a good purchase.

301 Country Christmas Quilt Blocks

5.0 out of 5 stars Imperfection is freeing, December 5, 2007
I disagree with other reviewers who took issue with the quality of the "country" ideas in this book. I think the charming irregularities and imperfections in the quilt blocks are wonderful! I think it frees me up as a quilter!

This book is for impatient quilters who want to create something pretty without the tediousness of perfect piecing. True, the tea-dye brown gets redundant, but I think this book's strong point is that it allows for individual variation in the spirit of the home made "country" look.

A lot of the patterns could easily be transformed into paper piecing or could be done using traditional pieced quilt blocks in similar "country" fabrics. The applique is rough and free-formed and so could be customized to suit one's own taste. I recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written college level introductory sociology textbook, August 19, 2006
This review is from: Sociology (Hardcover)
This is an excellent and well-written college level introductory sociology textbook. It's about the study of people, human social life, socialization, class and inequality, gender and racial dynamics, family, ethnicity, the psychology of alienation, collective behavior, the impact of global economics upon people, and similar topics.

It would be suitable for the advanced homeschooling student who is motivated to understand the world around us. Adult topics are handled sensitively, and complex issues are presented in a way that informs without overwhelming the reader. This is a great book, and manages to do a wonderful job of introducing many topics pertinent to the human race.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive high school science textbook, August 19, 2006
Glencoe Science - Physics and Chemistry - High School

This is a colorfully designed standard high school textbook with plenty of activities and lab ideas in over 25 chapters. It is recent enough that the references to computers do not seem outdated. Topics include motion and speed, gravity and Newton's Laws, energy, machines, electricity, magnetism, radioactivity, energy sources, waves, sound, light, matter, atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonds, metals, organic compounds, chemistry, solutions, chemical reactions, and acid and bases.

Connections are made with other branches of science. The resources in the back of the book include a math skill handbook. While there are chapter assessments, no answers appear in the student edition. This would make a good foundation for a year long science curriculum for the teenage homeschooler.
