Riedel Magnum Cabernet Decanter
Riedel Magnum Cabernet Decanter
Offered by GenCoDeals
Price: $52.66
66 used & new from $52.66

5.0 out of 5 stars A really excellent decanter for any red wine, May 23, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This an excellent decanter for any fine red wine. While the name says Bordeaux, it works well with any red wine. The name says magnum reflecting a capacity sufficient to hold two regular 750 ml bottles of wine. It is best used for single 750 ml bottles. This fills the decanter to just above the point of widest diameter which exposes the maximum amount of wine to air. The decanter also has a fairly slim profile so it is easy to store.

Of course the Riedel decanter that exposes the most wine to air is the Riedel Magnum Ultra Decanter. But this is far more expensive, more cumbersome due to its width, and is made with leaded glass. So I prefer the Magnum Cabernet Decanter.

Usage tips: The inside surface of the decanter is designed to attract the wine. Pour the wine slowly down the side of the decanter so it breathes while pouring. Maybe use soap to clean the inside ONCE when you first get it and be sure to rinse it really well. After, only use warm water to rinse the decanter. It will discolor over time from the red wine. A great two-step cleaning process is first Riedel 1-3/4-Inch Bottle Cleaner Beads and then Decanter Cleaning Brush - White.

Highly recommended.

MULTIPLE PILL SPLITTER
MULTIPLE PILL SPLITTER
Offered by Cibolo Press, LLC
Price: $29.95

5.0 out of 5 stars A really great, easy to use pill cutter, May 20, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have an ongoing need to split small (6mm or 0.24") pills. I tried several other cutters including some made of aircraft aluminum and the conventional cheap ones where you wedge a pill into an angled area to hold it while cutting. Those don't work well. This does.

Usage tips: As the product picture suggests: The two L-shaped bars on the base hold the pills in place; they are spring loaded, with just enough tension so they spread easily and stay in place at the apart position. Put in as many pills of the same shape and size as you wish. LEAVE SPACE between the pills so when they split they don't rub up against each other (which may make them crumble.) Gently bring the L-shaped bars back together. This self-aligns the pills under the cutting blade - really easy! See the slit in the top part of the unit? It has an embedded blade in a housing that is also spring loaded. It would be really tough to cut yourself. Place the top on the bottom so it rests on the pills. This helps ensure the pills are flat. Then I use both hands on the top to push down evenly, hard, and quick, and then release the top - this cuts all the pills.

I find that almost all pills cut quite cleanly. There is some pill dust - I just let it sweep into the pill container along with the split pills.

Some folks are interested whether a cutter can cut halves into quarters. Sorry - I haven't tried this. Especially with a small pill this might be a challenge with any pill cutter.

If I suddenly lost this unit I would immediately order another one. Very highly recommended.

100% Shower Head Shut Off Valve - Solid Brass - Chrome Finish
100% Shower Head Shut Off Valve - Solid Brass - Chrome Finish

4.0 out of 5 stars Well designed, operates smoothly, but does reduce water flow when full open. Recommended!, May 19, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This valve is very well made, it installs easily, and the flow-adjustment knob works very smoothly.

So, why did I give it only 4 stars? Because it does restrict water flow to some extent when fully open. I can't share a picture of the inside of the valve since it is installed! So let me describe: Consider the center of the valve where the black handle enters the valve body. The handle connects to the Teflon ball that adjusts water flow. But this center section has a diameter smaller than the diameter of the pipe to which you will connect the valve. So water from your water supply enters this valve, it (the water) reaches the center of the valve that has a narrower diameter which impedes water flow, it then enters the Teflon valve that gives you smooth infinite flow control from full on to full off, and it then goes to the shower head.

Having said all this, it operates really well. It does shut off completely.

One reviewer said the knob rotates full circle. Mine does not. It rotates 1/4 circle from full closed (handle perpendicular to pipe) to full open (handle in line with / parallel to pipe.)

Installation tip: I recommend using some plumber's Teflon tape on both threads even though the one with the washer doesn't need it to avoid leaks. The tape will make it easier to disassemble the valve and shower head at a later time.

Usage tip: Have the valve at least partly open when you turn on the shower water. Let the water start flowing and then adjust the flow down or turn it off as desired.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well designed but it restricts water flow even when fully open, May 19, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is for the K1140-B with the blue handle. This valve is good if you take account of a significant error in the product name and description as of the date of this review. It is well constructed and the flow control lever works smoothly.

But this valve does reduce water flow even when fully open. Below are pictures taken looking directly into the valve, one in the full open position and one in the full closed position. These clearly show the construction of the inside of the valve with the white (ceramic? - I'm not sure) flow adjustment mechanism. Even when fully open only about 1/2 the area of the opening allows water to flow.

I think this is similar to the chrome-handle version except that item's title as of the date of this review indicates that it reduces water flow.

So if you want a water flow reducer that can also fully shut off this is a good choice. If you prefer minimal flow reduction when open then consider other items. I returned this and purchased 100% Shower Head Shut Off Valve - Solid Brass - Chrome Finish which also restricts flow somewhat but seems better than this item - at least to me!

Installation note: I recommend using some plumber's Teflon tape on both threads even though the one with the washer doesn't need it to avoid leaks. The tape will make it easier to disassemble the valve and shower head at a later time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great filter for viewing the sun when using a lens with a 95mm diameter, May 13, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this filter to photograph the recent Mercury transit in which Mercury transited across the sun. It is perfect for that need. This 95mm filter screws onto any lens with a 95mm filter size. I suppose it can be used with a 95mm adapter ring on smaller-diameter lenses. It passes 1/100,000 of the light and is ideal for photographing the sun.

Packaging is less than ideal. It comes in a plastic bag inside a cardboard mailer. The filter arrived fine although I would prefer a plastic case for more-secure long-term storage.

Application note: You must never look directly at the sun. This applies even more so to looking at the sun through your camera viewfinder (if it has a direct viewfinder) that intensifies the light. This causes permanent eye damage. It is most safe to view the image on the camera's LCD screen. That way you can avoid looking in the direction of the sun by looking at the LCD from an angle.

During the Mercury transit there was a sun spot much larger than Mercury on the surface of the sun. So it may be interesting to photograph the sun even on 'regular' days.

Italian Wines 2016
Italian Wines 2016
by Gambero Rosso
Edition: Paperback
Price: $23.24
53 used & new from $19.24

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for Italian wines, unresponsive publisher, May 13, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Italian Wines 2016 (Paperback)
I have been buying this guide for about the last six years. It is still an excellent reference guide for fine Italian wines. The book is organized by wine region from North to South. There is an index at the back to easily find a producer's listing.

The primary producers in a region get a half-page listing that describes the winery and wines and lists ratings for new releases that were submitted for review. These are very informative although it helps to read carefully and think about your priorities versus the writers. For example, they seem to value a wine that shows well early. If you tend to age wines before drinking then how it shows at release may be of less interest to you. Secondary wineries in the region get a shorter listing at the end of the region's section.

There are very useful vintage charts for different wine regions - the most detailed I've ever seen - and also summary listings of 'best' wines.

I gave four stars this year instead of five. Two related reasons: (1) The first two producers I looked up - two extremely prominent and famous Veneto producers - are not listed whereas they have been in previous editions. (2) There is a contact email address in the book. I sent an email asking about item (1). No response at all. That is not very customer/reader friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement Windshield Mount for Garmin Driveluxe 50LMTHD that works well, May 13, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this as a backup mount for a Garmin Drive Luxe 50LMTHD. The mount is the same one that comes with the GPS device and it has the same magnetic mount.

The vehicle mount is in two parts. The curved magnetic-catch piece into which the GPS fits and the suction cup windshield mount. The suction cup windshield mount is the same part used with previous Garmin GPS units.

I use this adapter primarily when in another vehicle such as a rental car. In other vehicles I connect the magnetic-catch piece that holds the GPS to either the Garmin Friction Mount or the Garmin Portable Friction Mount - Frustration Free Packaging.

A power adapter note: This mount and the 50LMTHD use the same mini USB as in past Garmin units such as the 3790. BUT: Older power adapters will not power the 50LMTHD traffic function. Even though Garmin says the traffic antenna is built into the 50LMTHD you still need a new power adapter such as Garmin 10-24V - 2amp Vehicle Power Cable for the traffic to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good control solution although a bit expensive, March 26, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The control solution is easily used to do a glucometer test. Proper instructions:

1. Shake the bottle vigorously for at least 15 seconds.

2. On a clean nonporous surface place two drops of solution without letting the tip of the bottle touch the nonporous surface. If using side-access test strips you'll want to place the drops near the edge of the surface so you can bring the test strip up to the drop.

3. DO NOT USE the first drop.

4. Test using the second drop.

5. Compare to the range printed on the side of the test-strip vial.

It is handy that the solution is blue - easy to distinguish from blood. The bottle should be discarded 6 months after opening.

Only reason I didn't give it five stars is the price - $9.45 is steep compared to control solutions for other brands. But you must use the same brand control solution and glucometer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable toe separators - Medium size best, March 23, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased and compared the Medium (Dr. Frederick's Original Gel Toe Separators - Bunion Pain Relief for Men & Women - 6 Pieces - Medium) and Large ( Dr. Frederick's Original Gel Toe Separators - Bunion Pain Relief for Men & Women - 6 Pieces - Large) versions of these toe separators. There is not much difference in dimensions although there is a significant difference in fit. I find the Medium a much-better fit.

Viewed from the top, the large is about 2 mm (0.08") longer and 1 mm (0.04") wider. The width at the narrowest point (which determines actual toe separation) is about 2 mm wider in the Large.

So what does this all mean?

With fairly large feet and big toes I found the Medium very comfortable and it does separate the two largest toes. (toes 1 and 2.)

I found the Large too thick – it separates the toes too much and for me starts to get uncomfortable because of the greater separation.

Ideally the manufacturer would sell a mixed set so you can decide which size is best. I suggested that to the seller for future reference.

I strongly recommend the Medium. The gel material is very comfortable, holds its shape, and stays in place. I put some talcum powder on the palm of my hands and roll the separators in the powder before placing them between my toes. This seems to further improve comfort.

So I recommend trying the Medium and only going for the Large if the Medium simply don't provide separation.

Who Speaks For Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think
Who Speaks For Islam?: What a Billion Muslims Really Think

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly Valuable Reference and Guide, March 11, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think is a profoundly important book. It should be read thoughtfully by all policy makers and legislators globally. Truly, almost anyone will benefit from an open-minded, thoughtful read.

Based upon Gallup's World Poll, the book presents statistically-valid data illustrating opinions and perspectives from Muslims globally, bearing in mind that about 75% of Muslims are either Asian or African. Where a comparison is needed or insightful Western European and US American are the most-common comparisons. These comparisons present some of the most-stunning insights into misconceptions and lack of understanding on all sides.

The book addresses most key aspects as present in the typical media-based dialogue about Islam, and dispels so many popular beliefs:

The religion and the people.
The distinction between democracy and theocracy.
What makes a person "radicalize?" (NOT religiosity)
What do Muslim women want? (culturally-appropriate rights and freedom)
What do Muslim people want and value?
Are we experiencing a clash of cultures? (no)
What would it take from Muslims and non-Muslims alike to coexist?

To Gallup's credit they did phenomenally broad and deep research, and then let the data tell the story. Page after page illustrates how peoples' opinions – Muslim and non-Muslim – are at odds with "conventional wisdom."

Some reviewers say that since the book is old (copyright 2007) that it is no longer valid or that the data is weak. Sadly, the book is completely relevant in 2016 and the need for its factual, groundbreaking messages perhaps even more compelling than in 2007.

We can only wish that the clarity of this book's data and messages could inform US and indeed global policy discussions and deliberations.

Very highly recommended.
