5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with many color & b/w illustrations of paintings ..., February 9, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Beautiful book with many color & b/w illustrations of paintings and prints which clearly displays Sandzen's mastery of both mediums! Swedish born and trained Sandzen was one of America's leading post-impressionists and the only one of whom I know whose landscape subjects are entirely Western. A great buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange and stranger!, August 4, 2012
Klinger's 19th century etchings are Freudian dreams and his superior body of work is the link between the 18th century etchings of Goya and the 20th century art of Dali, de Chirico, Hitchcock and Rod Sterling. Why is he not more well known? This is a 2009 reissue of the 1970s Dover publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy, July 5, 2012
This is the greatest little radio I've ever owned. It includes HD tuning, iPod dock, CD player, tagging and preset options in a small compact black shell- currently the only radio on the market to do so. The sound is very good for a little boom box. However, I have noticed that reception is affected by where in the house I place this radio. Some areas are better than others. This model is second generation. Insignia sold out of the first model. Buy this one while you can. I also own their small portable HD radio with ear buds which I take with me on walks through the park. Buy them while you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Raisonne' of West Coast prints, February 9, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a beautiful book on the complete early to mid 20th century American landscape etchings of Roi Partridge. He was a West Coast printmaker & husband of San Franciscan pioneering photographer Imogene Cunningham. Partridge was an advocate of "plein air" etching, an exponent of traditional linear methods on copper & zinc plate and a colleague of California photographers Edward Weston & Ansel Adams and fellow etcher Gene Kloss of Taos, New Mexico. This is a complete raisonne' of Roi Partridge's wonderful B/W etchings. Good reproductions, informed text, and a great buy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 9, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This 1994 book omits many prints and the quality of the print reproductions is poor and as such cannot be considered a raisonne'. Some prints appear out of focus while others lack luminosity and contrast- essential for viewing aquatints. Certainly Charles Capps deserves better. The text is minimal. This slim book is very disappointing.

Superb CD and deserving of a Grammy! Arturo carries on the tradition started by Father Chico. If you enjoy this music, you might try Nachito Herrera & Pura Cubano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Updated model available-Excellent buy with multiple features, January 17, 2012
There is an updated slicker model available (Model NS-BHDIPO1) through Best Buy for $99.98 that Amazon does not list. I love this item with HD1,2 & 3 radio/tag feature/CD player/iPod dock all in one. It has all four features for which I was looking that no other model has- even high end like Polk & Bose. Two cons: (1) the inability to control bass & treble however the sound is good for the price and (2) only commercial CDs can be played. This unit will not "read" iTune music downloads ripped to CD. It does not come with a remote or ear phones but there is a jack for earphone connection. I liked this model so well I bought two- upstairs and downstairs. I live & work in my two story single family dwelling in the suburbs and reception has been NO problem. The large display light did stop displaying the station and songs once. I disconnected from the power, plugged it back in and it worked like a charm. A wonderful product! Insignia has cornered the HD market. Keep them coming Insignia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable CD., November 25, 2011
This review is from: Tony Bennett: Duets II (Audio CD)
Lady Gaga is perfectly cast as the "tramp" in the first number- very sassy and sexy! And again... Amy Winehouse was the perfect artist to interpret Billie Holiday's Body & Soul. She "channeled" Holiday's pain, angst and sound although, in hindsight, it was not much of a stretch. Winehouse was battling her own demons when this duet was recorded. Michael Buble' is the apple that didn't fall too far from the tree. He and Bennett are carbon copies of one another. Very "rat pack" of them. The duet with k.d. lang is a study in perfectly smooth harmonies. This is not surprising as these two have worked together in the past producing an album together. Great harmonies for the evening. I have always loved Sheryl Crow because of her ability to be all things to all people and maintain her distinctive sound. She crosses genres very gracefully. I've never been a big fan of Norah Jones. When I saw her live performance she seemed emotionally detached from the body of her music and very cold and aloof. Oddly, her performance on this CD is warm and inviting. I suspect some southern hospitality and charm. Her voice has that southern twang. Bennett is perfectly matched with Natalie Cole. Cole is another favorite of mine. She knows the entire jazz songbook by heart and it shows. Both of their impeccable jazz chops shine on this duet. Faith Hill's voice reminds me of the great Ella Fitzgerald's voice... perfect pitch! Bet this is the first time she's been compared to Ella! Faith has been on hiatus for six years but can still come back strong, singing anything she chooses. Josh Groban's appearance is misplaced. His voice is so huge that he overwhelms anyone he is partnered with. Bennett is not his equal nor is anyone else. He always sings as if he is making love with the listener. He always makes his audience feel special. Love Josh Groban. The duet with Bocelli was a little strained as I felt Andrea was holding back so Bennett could keep up. Bennett was certainly over powered by his beautiful and towering voice. Never heard of Alejandro Sanz. The Latin tinge was a nice twist to add a little "spice". The solo by the great Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was also a nice touch. The surprise on the album for me was Queen Latifah. Her voice is strong and she knows her jazz phrasing. I will definitely be checking out more of her music in the future. I would have liked to hear more Mariah Carey. She has a strong soulful gospel voice that I could listen to forever. There is one GREAT performance on this CD- Aretha Franklin brings perfect timing, phrasing and passion to every performance she has ever done. Her breath control is amazing in light of the fact that she is not in the best of health. She turns every performance into a soulful Gospel! As with Josh Groban's duet, she also overshadows Bennett and is rapturous. No surprise. Now for the three duets that were less than successful. John Mayer just wasn't given enough "air time" on this duet. It felt like Bennett was pushing him throughout their number. Willie Nelson? Ugh! [no words can describe how awful] ...Although his guitar solo was refreshing. Carrie Underwood's "little girl" demeanor and voice really turns me off. I'm not a fan. Skip these three numbers and enjoy the remainder of the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!, October 14, 2011
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a fabulous book especially for those interested in early Renaissance printmaking, history and science. Clearly time, expense and effort were not issues when publishing this tome. Many leading Renaissance artist's etchings and block prints are included-Durer & Goltzius among them. A wealth of obscure and marvelous images of scientific themes are included and range from Astrology, Cartography, Natural History, Anthropology, Anatomy to Measurement, Biology, Zoology, Geometry, Botany etc. Many reproductions are enlarged. Therefore detailed line "hatching" and "stippling" can clearly be seen. The scholarly text is exhaustive and academic. My only gripe- it's a weighty paperback, having been printed on heavy glossy & matt stock. Because of this, I foresee future problems with the spine & binding falling apart with use. We shall see! Otherwise- superior buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonder-cut is superior to linoleum, October 12, 2011
Advantage: I have painful arthritis in my hands. Wonder-cut is much easier to carve than wood or battle ship linoleum and does hold fine lines for all detailed work- no crumbling as in other types of cork. Little pressure is needed to achieve great carving results. Because Wonder Cut is much less thick than a linoleum block (about the thickness of two 18 gauge copper plates), it passes between the drum and bed of an etching press with ease. It is not mounted on particleboard like battle ship linoleum and artists can print using an etching press rather than a hand held barren, saving precious time and stress on the hands. I use dark black ink for the offset of the key block onto the color block and had no problem seeing the image throughout the carving process. A thin coat of Bull's Eye Shellac between inking will seal the cork and solve the problem of picking up surface texture while printing. Let dry over night before proceeding to an additional color.

Disadvantage: Because Wonder-cut is flexible and has little backing support, large long blocks bow in the middle when moved from inking table to press. As a result, registration can be very difficult if the printer plans to place the Wonder-cut face down on top of the paper (traditional method). The first area to touch the paper and bed is the middle of the inked block NOT the corners. Caution needs to be taken and use of a registration guide on acetate is helpful but not full proof. A printer could place the Wonder-cut face up with paper on top (non-traditional) but then risks the drum of the press slightly pushing the paper off the block during the process causing faulty registration. Take it very slow because the drum will drop over the end of the Wonder-cut and possibly push both the paper and block forward about a 1/8". Use slopped wooden guides around edges of the block to eliminate this problem.
