5.0 out of 5 stars Depiction of coarse human nature, March 27, 2001
This review is from: Jean De Florette (DVD)
Jean de Florette and Manon the Spring have very special place in my movie collection. These are very long, French movies. Often some people just hate French movies, because they are so pecked with meaning and philosophy, and they are so lengthy and slow. Although, I can not say that this movie is too different from the typical european cinema stereotype, Jean de Florette is very moving and powerful movie. These two movies, together, bring to us the historical picture of the late 19th century, France. I thought the movie had a great theme: intellectual man, who wants to live like a Roussau's noble savage(man of freedom), move into a small rural, agricultural town. He tries to use methods developed by scientists and rationalists into farming. At the same time, the story introduces a native farmer with dark intentions, jean de florette. His greed, pretention, and obsession drive him to do unthinkable evil to his new neighbor. Jean de Florette is a must have classic for all movie lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simpler the better, it's all visual., February 21, 2001
This review is from: Starship Troopers (DVD)
There are Si-fic movies that have lengthy explanation for how things work and all technical detales. There are Si-fi movies that try to create its own world throughout the movie, which is limited to only 2hrs. The most great si-fi, including Star Wars, Aliens, don't try to explain to much or set rules for that world. Those things, we can get from books. That's what novels are for. Starship Troopers is a great si-fi movie, not because it creates its own world, with lengthy history and explanation for tecnological pregress. It's good, because its simply good for the eyes. FOR YOUR EYES only. Visually, it achieves the level of Star Wars and Alien series. Story is simple and not too much of complications. but, I still enjoyed it, because it most accurately portrays my imagination of what the future would be like. This movie is simply great. Get ready to visually stunned. DVD has alot of extra features. Great buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for non-professionals, bad for real linguists., January 15, 2001
I purchased this about two months ago. I am studying Russian at a college, so i thought this dictionary would help me find words quickly. When i got this product and used it for my studying, i discovered couple problems. Firstly, in Russian grammar there are two types of verbs, Perfective and Imperfective. Sometimes these two verbs are completely different. So, it's very important for the user to know which one's which. This dictionary doesn't differentiate the verbs. This dictionary might be helpful for travelers, but it is very bad tool for those who are studying Russian seriously. I don't recommand it. Does it worth spend a hundred dollars on this? NO Get Oxford Russian English dictionary paper version. It gives more information on expressions and grammar. I can't recommand this even for travelers. Does it worth spending a hundred dollars for two weeks trip to Russia. No. Get a pocket dictionary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden treasure found., January 14, 2001
This review is from: My Teacher's Wife (DVD)
O.K. Firstly, whoever wrote the editorial shown above doesn't know how to critique movies. I watch alot of movies, and this movie was far better than the most of what i watch. The plot was excellent. It's a situation that you don't want to fall into, but than you kind of imagine about it or everyone once in awhile get there. High school senior falls in love with beautiful wife of his math teacher. It's a probably setting. I mean don't you ever get into situation where you find someone you really like, but you are totally not in the right position to have a relationship. Some people might say this movie is too didactic or "do-the-good-thing' type of movie. Well, I think this movie is more than that. It did make me interested in the plot. Over all, I would say this is very excellent movie and if you are looking for a half 'chick fleak' and half 'comedy' type of movie, go ahead and order this DVD. It's PRETTY GOOD.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is mirror-version of Scream., December 12, 2000
This review is from: Scary Movie (DVD)
Scary Movie is really funny and entertaining. What I like most about this movie is, though, the fact that this movie follows the main story line of Wes Craven's Scream. For those who don't know, Kevin Williams, the screenplay writer of the original Scream, originally chose its title as Scary Movie. Later they decided to change the title to Scream. so, Scary Movie is like a twin sister of Scream. If Scream was intense, scary, and screamy, Scary Movie shows how the same story line can be made as a hilarious comedy. It just as entertaining and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars A movie that can fit all puzzle pieces together., December 9, 2000
I've owned this DVD for almost two years now. i probably watched this five or six times. Every time I watch this movie, I notice it again and again, how skillfuly pieces are put together. First of all, nothing that comes up on the screen is accident. That means, every little action or even just slight passing of an object gives the viewer a piece of information. Director De Palma did a superb job of implying what's going to happen, without being too obvious. for example, in the beginning of the movie, you see a Russian couple walking around, drunk, out side of the embassy. Screen focuses on them just for two seconds. You wouldn't normally guess that they would have any connection with the storyline. Well, it later turns out that the couple was another IMF team working in a mole hunt mission. Another very subtle part is where Tom Cruise is obtaining the NOC list at the headquater of CIA, in Lanley. When Tom Cruise copies that list from the computer, while hanging on a rope from a ventilation, he takes out two blank writable CD's. I mean why the hell would he want to take out two CD's for. Well, little bit later in the movie, that small, subtle scene plays a role. Mission Impossible I has a lot of subtle scenes. Watch carefully, then things will make sense. All pieces fall into one great piece. As far as DVD is concerned, it has low video quality. But I think it worths spending money on DVD.
