Neil Young is a genius and this album has at least a couple of terrific highlights (Cinnamon Girl & Down by the River) that tap into his creative greatness, but these tracks aside, I find this to be an otherwise fairly unremarkable album which is pedestrian and plodding in parts. Even 'Down by the River' which is cool for the most part lacks the kind of dynamic ebb and flow that such a long track has the potential to deliver. Strangely, towards the last few minutes the track suddenly seems to lose its dynamics and bottom end as if cut to another recording of the same track. (Apropos of nothing, the cover really is a beautifully composed shot.) For me, Neil's first self-titled album is a much more engaging listen and my appreciation of it has grown over the years. Not so for this, I'm afraid.
