BEWARE!!!! The capacity of the device you order is not going to be the amount of space available to you when you get it. I ordered the 24TB version, I was assuming it was going to be 4 8TB drives arranged in a RAID 5 configuration. The device did come configured by default in a RAID 5 configuration, but the available space to me was only 18TB. They fail to tell you the individual drive capacities, and the RAID configuration it comes in. Highly sneaky and manipulative marketing move. They "technically" give you as much disk space advertised, but only if you reconfigure the device and remove all the RAID 5 drive failure protections and risk losing all your data in a single drive failure. Which pretty much negates the whole reason to purchase a multibay RAID array in the first place.
I'm not impressed by being intentionally deceived by WD. To be honest, it's a potential Class Action in the making.
We are sorry to hear about your initial experience with WD My Cloud EX4100 device and appreciate your time for providing feedback. Please know that the WD My Cloud EX4100 comes with RAID 5 setup out of the box and can be configured with RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10 and JBOD etc. The RAID 5 will provide you the data protection by dedicating a quarter of each drive to fault tolerance leaving three quarters of the system capacity available for data storage. You can refer the link mentioned below for in-depth information about the RAID storage.
The 24TB My Cloud EX4100 device comes with 4X6TB of drives into which the capacity will be available for data storage will be near to 18TB by default under the RAID 5 configuration. You can configure the device in RAID 0 in order to utilise the complete capacity of the drives installed into it.
We want to assist you further about the concern with the RAID in order to provide the good overall experience with the device. We would recommend you to please contact us by phone or email from the link given below with reference to the Amazon review to be redirected to the My Cloud team member for support.
