This wonderful new novel is about the break up of a family as a result of a devastating loss. The author demonstrates the inability of the main character to express his pain and thus to reach out to those who are closest to him. Instead of bringing his family together to console each other in their grief he separates himself from them and is driven to feed on the anger and guilt he feels towards himself, towards the drug dealer who commits the crime and towards a world in which criminal behavior is not always punished. This heart wrenching story of a grieving father takes place during a period when New York City was dealing with a major blackout and subsequent looting, police corruption scandals and Son of Sam Terror. The author incorporates all of these incidents into the background he has created for his novel. There is a complex layering in this book as the background events are woven into the story line. As good as the story is it is the writing that sets it apart. It is truly a page turner that you won’t be able to put down yet it is filled with incredibly vivid descriptions of New York City, the poetry of the streets, the workings of the police department and the basic instincts and emotions that we all share and can relate to on a visceral level. The authors down to earth dialogue helps us to easily immerse ourselves into the story line. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this talented new author.
