I bought this trash can several years ago and it's still going strong. At the time I paid a little less than $40 at BJ's Wholesale. I remember having low expectations of this "gadget" trash can because of the low price compared to other stainless steel cans. I could not have been more wrong. First, the battery life (this one takes 4 D) is excellent and I can't remember the last time I replaced them. I would estimate once a year and I have a big extended family and host a lot family get togethers. It has an open and close buttons that when pressed will leave the lid open until you choose to close it which is handy when your cleaning up and will be go going back and forth to the trash several times in a short period. The sensor works very well with the lid opening and closing very effectively giving you the right amount of open time to allow for trash disposal while keeping smells in check. All the moving parts are sturdy and have worn very well. What are the Cons? There are a few but nothing that would prevent me from buying again if this thing ever breaks down. First, the plastic that covers the up and down buttons wore off completely. The sensor still works fine as do the buttons that are now exposed. Visually not perfect but still functional. Second, I have a fairly small kitchen so when there are a lot of people walking in and out of the kitchen the sensor will trip if someone walks too close to the can. Lastly, and this is really nitpicking, most guests assume you have to touch the buttons to open (they are labeled open/close) the lid so I'm always having to explain how it works and/or use the close button to close the lid. A better design would be to put the open / close buttons on the back of the lid leaving only the sensor in view.
