I was eagerly anticipating the release of Cari Mora, the first Thomas Harris novel in many years, and perhaps that's why I feel so disappointed. The first thing I noticed was the giant typeset. Did I accidentally reserve a large-print copy from the library? Why no, it simply was set in a huge type in an obvious attempt to make the book appear longer than it is. Then I started to read the first chapter which reads like Harris was watching a B grade t.v. show and typing out what he saw, complete with sound effects. The villain is a caricature of Harris' past characters and the sentence structure is beyond simplistic. For example, one paragraph reads: "Cari stopped four steps from the bottom. She did not feel his piggy eyes on her. Good, that. " It only gets worse from there. Do yourself a favor and read Red Dragon again instead of wasting your time on this one.
