So I got this card thinking it might be an upgrade from my Creative Zx soundblaster. I love EVGA, their customer service is the best in the PC component industry. However this card basically fried itself when I plugged it in. I took every possible precaution when installing it, turning off the pc/unplugging everything/taking out the gpu that was in the way/taking out the creative sound card/ gently putting the evga card into my brand new pc mobo, connecting it with the brand new EVGA power supply, closing the case, plugging back everything, turning the switch on the back of the power supply on then turning on the computer etc.
But right away I smelled what I can only describe as $250 bucks going up in smoke, and shut down my computer, unplugged everything, and opened the case. But by the time I opened the case I didn't see any smoke.
So I plugged it all back in, turned on the computer, and this time turned on my cam video phone because it magnifies everything in a bright light. Sure enough I could see smoke coming out of the card.
My first thought was oh crap I hope the mobo didn't fry that PCI slot. but after I turned it all down and put the creative soundblaster card in and hooked it up with the same audio cable everything was working fine.
So I contacted EVGA and was like, "So hey guys my card set on fire." and they were like "Hmm. That's not good." And I was like "Yeah, here's a video." and that conversation went on for about thirty minutes, during which time the very nice CS man asked me about the PSU I was using. I showed him pictures to confirm it was a brand new EVGA powersupply I Had just bought from amazon, and that the sata cables were the correct cables, and that the sata cable I had been reconnected to SSD and blu ray and they were working fine. I asked them if they wanted me to send them the card, as I like EVGA and wouldn't mind waiting for a replacement. But he said just go through Amazon because they will get the card eventually since it's defective (and smells like burnt hopes and dreams).
But as much as I love EVGA, and will continue to buy their products in the future, including buying a new one of these cards and returning this defective one to Amazon - at this moment I really can't recommend a product when there is a chance, however infinitesimal, that defective units are being sold that might cause fires in peoples expensive cases.
I will, however, update my review with what I think of the replacement card, when I return this one and get that one. So... Cross your fingers and check back later maybe :)
