Customer Review

I bought this book because I thought it'd be imparting nutritional knowledge that would be unique and valuable. What I got seemed to be fairly dated information because there is a lot of stuff out that with more conclusive finding than in this book. Plus there is a HUGE portion of this book devoted to cooking meats, especially the organ meats, which is a total waste to me (I eat little meat, it kind of grosses me out) although I like the idea of consuming ALL of an animal that has been slaughtered and if I DID eat meat I'd definitely include organ meats. AND the book has very limited space devoted to vegetables and many of those recipes included pork, which I don't eat at ALL and few recipes for fish and NOTHING for meat substitutes. It is glaringly obvious that this author is a prolific carnivore who has not embraced the "anti-inflammation pyramid." So in summary, I felt the description of the book should have maybe have been more clear and I would tell other prospective buyers that I think this book does a good job of embracing a natural way of consuming, avoid processed food, cook from scratch, waste nothing, etc. but I'd warn vegetarians or people with a more plant based diet to look elsewhere for cookbooks.

Update: After reading other NT reviews on Amazon, I will add that eating organic, locally grown, minimally processed foods seems to be a fairly common lifestyle where I live. It seems kind of like a no brainer with all the information out on this subject, witness the movement of young people growing their own food, keeping chickens in their yards, etc. I have the resource of two local, socially conscious stores who know where the meat, produce and dairy products they sell come from and what the farmers' methods are so I am aware of the pitfalls of buying food in our world. Yes, it is more expensive to eat what I term "more responsibly," but the rewards are a healthier body and hopefully a better world for our kids to inherit. I was a vegetarian before I had kids but I changed my lifestyle to include meat while they grew up. Now that they are gone, I eat little meat, some chicken, fish but after being put on the "Zone Diet" for medical reasons and seeing a vast improvement in my weight, cholesterol levels and just feeling SO much better, my diet is now based on vegetables with whole grains, fruit, meat and fats playing a lesser role in my diet. I eat whatever I want when I want it, but I just FEEL BETTER when I eat a lot of organic veggies. The what I termed, "more conclusive findings" in my review are books, papers, studies, reports from a myriad of sources on the internet. I read A LOT of information on whatever issue I'm interested in and then I sort of 'average out' the findings. They almost always agree on some elements so I find those "fairly reliable" and those issues they fail to agree on I call "inconclusive." And research in the areas of health and food is constantly being updated. So again, this book is ok, but I'd have appreciated a heads up on her diet recommendations, i.e., SO based on a carnivorous diet.
