I have read that Kubrick started working on this project well before "Platoon", as a master craftsman he took years to get where he wanted before filming began. This film, unlike the other films about Vietnam starts with recruits in Parris Island, being molded into the perfect Marines. I found this film spartan and cold (that can be said of any Kubrick film, except Spartacus), and yet darkly humorous, (particularly R Lee Ermey's Drill Instructor whipping the recruits into fighting shape.) Kubrick to me brought more of a detached view to war than any other director out there. (See "Paths of Glory" an indictment of French leadership in the 1st World War)
The transfer was excellent, the sound and picture as I remember seeing them on the big screen. 5 Stars.
