I have only toyed with being a gamer so have just enough knowledge of gaming to be dangerous. However, I am a programmer and have been building websites and working exclusively online for quite a few years now. I think that the virtual world opens up an entirely new avenue for original story ideas and author Matthew Kennedy has really hit on a great one here with his "Gamers and Gods" series.
"AES" is the first book in this series and sets the stage with a back story and some fantastic action. The year is 2051 and AES awakens after being asleep for 3000 years to find that all is not well with the world. While technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, there is still the age old battle of good and evil and it's has been taken up a notch, requiring his intervention on a more virtual level this time. He has to fight this battle online, in a game, and luckily he has met some more modern people who are able to help him out. The rewards for AES are pretty great if they are victorious but the penalty for the human race pretty grim if they aren't.
This was a great story with a lot of intensity and some wonderful dialogue throughout. I loved the blending of past and present in the novel and it just made things that much more interesting. There were elements of romance, adventure, sci fi, and much more in this intriguing tale that sets up what I hope to be a very engaging series. Well done.
