The recent self-titled album Dark Model is the product of Tatsuya Oe, also known as DJ Captain Funk, and is another excellent offering of orchestral and symphonic electronica. This collection of songs is a beat-oriented, futuristic and emotional instrumental narrative and a great addition to the cinematic/EDM genre.
The first cut on the album is an exciting opener, "Dance of Wrath", not unlike the overture of a musical or movie would be with both classical and progressive stylistic traits. It has driving themes and strong percussion moments. The second song on Dark Model has a back-beat groove and entitled, "Fate." It has nice melodic interaction with the percussion and bass giving it a good trance vibe. I think fans of Captain Funk will enjoy it, in particular.
Then, "Close to Infinity" opens with softer sounds that quickly move into a moving, percussive section. This is one of my favorite's on the Dark Model album with its sounds of orchestral epic trance. "Broken Arrows" is the fourth cut and begins with a simple piano duet that transitions quickly to a full on symphonic experience with big brass sounds ripe for a soundtrack. An interlude of more advanced piano melodies helps the piece build in anticipation of the big finish and resolves nicely with another brief piano moment.
"Onibi (Demon Fire)" has an upbeat and thrilling feel that reminds me of a very intense scene in a movie. It's filled with excitement and intrigue. Next, the "Hope is Never Gone" track is another upbeat selection with a driving, percussive theme. It pulls back for a piano section and then uses quick synthesized string riffs to build back to the full sound and strong effect of the piece.
"Candle in the Desert" is and inspiring and wistful song, which I noticed had been featured in an Elysium film trailer, and starts with a slower feel that emphasizes a smooth string accompaniment complimented by a pleasant piano melody. It then builds into a more fully orchestrated piece that ends with some speed. Then, "Ran (Resistance)" opens with aggressive bass and orchestral sounds in a call-and-response before moving into a driving section that feels like a modern version of a latin mass with choral voices featured throughout. Next, "Double Cross" gives a mysterious and industrial vibe to the listener. "Prayer for the New Moon" opens with a suspenseful motif of sustained strings and native-sounding flute and stringed instrument and is a very atmospheric and eerie selection.
"Moment of Truth" is a very exciting and uplifting track with breakbeats in tribal and drumline percussive style, while "Judgement Day" opens with solo violin and accompanying strings and build nicely with a driving tempo to the end. The ballad "Abandoned" is a nice change from the upbeat feel of the initial tracks of the album. I got a bit an 80's metal nostalgia from this song. Next, "I Will Return" starts with a driving beat but at a soft dynamic level. A duet of strings formulates the overriding melody in a ballad section that made me reminisce of memories past. This selection has soundtrack written all over it.
The track "Farewell to the Moon" is an ambient piece that grows from silence into a beautifully orchestrated ballad with an ethereal quality. The final cut on the Dark Model album is "Oath (Dubstep Remix)" and it's certainly a finale to this excellent compilation of EDM performances. I recognized it from a Verizon commercial! It has everything from funky sections to softer, slower interludes that build into giant sounds of symphonic trance bliss.
Dark Model has produced a gem with this album. Fans of Trailer Music will love this album.
