Kudos Ladies! I have followed the Simple Green Smoothies blog for quite some time - I receive their emails and have tried many of their recipes. So, when I saw they had a book out - I asked them to send me one at a discount in exchange for my review. This is a beautiful book with a lot of photos. The smoothie photos look delicious. I like a lot of colorful photos in a recipe book. This book has made its way to a favorite shelf in my kitchen.
In the How to Use This Book section - the gals describe Rawkstar as: an enthusiastic person who drinks at least one green smoothie a day.
I like their personal journeys that they both share, how they met and brainstormed how to help their families become healthier.
Page 4: To make a dramatic change in your health, we believe, involves embracing just one healthy habit at a time. Not 20. Not even 5. Start with one really good one. Start with a daily green smoothie.
- I've always believed in "It's not a Diet. It's a Lifestyle" I have followed this rule for many years.
- Jen and Jadah share their stories of being moms, being tired, not eating healthy, not enough time to prepare healthy meals, .....
- There is a 10-day kick start which I go back to now and then with a game plan of only 1 green smoothie a day for 10 days.
Page 9-10 is a must read section. Why we don't count calories.
I have noticed the more I drink green smoothies, the more I crave them. You'll notice increased energy, glowing skin, sharper clarity and focus, strengthened immune system, regular bowel movements, weight loss
I have a standby smoothie thanks to these ladies from the very beginning - my fave is frozen banana, handful of spinach, handful of blueberries, frozen strawberries and mango and/or pineapple, coconut water, squeeze half a lemon, protein powder and flax seed. If I have green apples - I'll always add to whatever smoothie I'm having because I like the benefits and the flavor.
I have tried spinach and kale but I am curious about Dandelion greens and turnip greens. Page 32 has a graph showing the different flavors of greens in categories like Subtle, Earthy, Peppery, Bitter and Herbaceous. Very informative - good info to know.
I freeze the kale in cubes after watering down with coconut water. I use cupcake tins so I know right away the round ones are kale. I usually freeze the spinach whole in Ziploc freezer bags if I don't think I'll be able to get to it all before it can go bad.
The book offers lots of recipes - I am going to try the homemade coconut milk and the homemade vanilla recipes because I like knowing what is in my drinks.
I like hot drinks and had never considered making a hot drink with spinach so I am curious about the Mexican Hot Chocolate recipe on page 222. With spinach? Get out! I'm ok with spinach in my cold smoothie but hot chocolate? Hmmm........ I will post a follow up on my review here after I try it.
Jim and I are of a mindset that we don't buy new until our old stops working. As long as it works and does what we need - we are satisfied. But, boy would I love to try a Vitamix blender based on what I've heard about them.
This is not a crash diet of any sort - you drink the smoothie daily along with following a balanced diet - what I do notice - is I have more energy and I eat less because this smoothie fills me up. I look forward to trying many of these recipes and I really enjoy the photos of the families spending time together and being silly.
I recommend this book and look forward to more from these gals. I have a feeling this book is going to have a lot of kitchen stains on it. It will be used with anticipation and love.
