Updated review: 2/13/2013 - PRICE HAS COME DOWN OVER $5 TO A MANAGABLE $19.88 - but make sure you spend another $5 or so to get the free shipping this is sold by amazon. Everyone should have more than one type of emergency lighting in a family to cover all your needs.
Original review: Start off - not cheap, not cheap in price (cost), NOT cheaply made either. You get your monies worth but it takes a few uses to get the full effect & benefits.
The upright front facing light (bulbs) at first seem like poor design, however, since it has significant weight to it when you lift the front to expose the doublesided lighting it doesn't tip over (which you might think will happen) but DOES NOT. It is VERY stable. When it is lifted completely upright and vertical it lights up a small/medium sized room, but many more reasonably priced lanterns do that too (I own a few by energizer).
For TASK or AREA lighting it is GREAT - place on dinner table and lift half way up (in an inverted L) it lights the table beautifully. You can read by it in the same manner. The bulbs are bright and can affect your eyes so the lifting of the bulbs to a more upward angle is the best position for really close work. It does have a reflective mirror backing behind the bulbs when closed it makes it reflective enough if above your head on a cabinet or frig to cast a fairly bright light out forward, but casts shadows so close work is impossible (like meal preparation or hygene issues).
This lantern is not a universal light or lantern you'd rely on alone but is an excellent companion to other emergency lighting used for general illumination.
Battery compartment is behind the mirror and what gives it the weighted stand needed to open the light up, be careful turning the plastic screws on the mirror backing when changing batteries.
Added bonus: Girls a good self defense item if you are alone in the dark - nice & heavy with a good grip if you need it! lol
