Clearly I'm a fashion nut, because I don't think any normal person would compare a piece of literature that was just made into a Baz Luhrman film filled with Prada dresses to a cookbook, especially as I still haven't seen the movie. But I digress.
This is an amazing collection of recipes that I am trying to figure out how I ever lived without. I must admit that I've only made a few of the recipes, but I do have a very keen eye, and there are countless number of recipes I'm sure will be just as amazing as my daily elixir I've been addicted to on page 96, Sesame Apple. Your child hates kale? No worries, they won't have a darn clue what it is they are drinking. Forget about children, my husband is worst than any child when it comes to "healthy" foods, and he has no problems drinking this. Pomegranate Orange on p. 57 is phenomenal too. Goji berries aren't a favorite in this house, but fabulously undetectable in this drink. The porportion of ingredients Ms. Morris concocts is like the porportion of a Yohji Yamamoto runway model; complete perfection. (Uhm, yes I'm being serious. And no, I'm not pretentious.)
My only regret is that I was unable to meet Ms. Morris at her NYC book signing event as I had a prior engagement that I absolutely could not miss. I have only gone fan girl on two celebrities (Chris Rock & Baz Luhrman) and I used to work with celebrities daily in my past life. I would have totally gone gaga over Ms. Morris had I met her, as I think the book that she created, and what she does is truly life-changing. I have recommended this book to countless friends and complete strangers alike and probably sold quite a number of Vita-Mix's in the process. I bought a Vita-Mix a couple years ago, and for the most part it sat unused until this book came along. I am no longer scared to buy fruit, as if it starts to go bad, I just chop it up and put it in the freezer and know that I can look in the index and find something that tastes heavenly.
This book and the ideas in it, have truly revolutionized food. I've been collecting cookbooks quite seriously for 14-20 years now, and this would be the one book that I would be very sad about, had it never been written. Dear Ms. Morris, thank you so much for spending months and years in the kitchen to invent these superbly amazing recipes :) xoxxo~L
update: 1/2014 : I read some 1 star and 2 star reviews, & have to say those people are short sighted. Perhaps they possess no editing skills and or lack the ability to taste food. Yes, some of the ingredients are unusual, but I agree with the author that some powders will last forever. Other ingredients are pricey, & I find myself buying often, but the health benefits surpass the cost. I buy mulberries, Medjool dates, pears, hemp seeds, apple juice, pineapple juice, and pecans constantly. Coconut water and lucuma somewhat frequently. However the bag of gelatinized maca and large bag of chia seeds I expect to last a year. Drinking a smoothie or two a day to reach my RDA of fiber, price-less. (seriously, do you know how difficult it is to get 25-30 grams of fiber a day? 1 pear has 4 grams, just to put in perspective. Only 3% of Americans get their RDA of fiber)
I read a review stating that there is no dairy in this book. Improvise and substitute the almond milk/coconut milk recipes with your moo juice you daft woman? ! One of my favorite recipes I make daily is the Chocolate chip cookie dough, but I couldn't stand the cacao nibs, so I add ground flax seed instead. Strawberry chamomile mulberry smoothie with chia seeds is a must, the watercress pineapple is unreal, and the apple arugula with hemp seed basic but phenomenal. Still LOVE LOVE this book. And my super picky husband when it comes to food, who reminds me of Mikey in the Life cereal commercials, yes even he will drink it. It's a very recent phenomenon that healthy food actually tastes good & this book is the first of it's kind. Quite frankly it's so well done, I can't imagine another book in future being any better.
