I have a love/hate relationship with Star Ocean 5. Despite the many reasons there were for not liking this game, I found others reasons for enjoying it. If you're interested in reading why I enjoyed AND despised playing this game, read below. Also, if you're on the fence about buying this game, don't buy it until the price is reduced!
If you want the short version, here you go:
6.5/10 - Play for the combat and crafting system while enjoying the view with multiple playable characters. Don't play if you dislike empty characters, 20 hour long stories, backtracking and a grindy gaming experience.

Background:
I had high hopes and expectations for this game... Sadly, those expectations were not met. My hopes were also absolutely crushed when reading the many early reviews about what a shame this game was. However, if you're willing to throw aside any of your past knowledge of the franchise and ignore the negative reviews, then you might find Star Ocean 5 to be slightly bearable. I certainly did.
If you're new to the franchise, I encourage you to play the previous Star Ocean games before this one. However, if you do decide to start with Integrity and Faithlessness then PLEASE do not base the Star Ocean franchise off of this specific title. Please play the other games. Now let's get going to the main event, the pros and cons.
Pros:
- Scenery: The game is absolutely beautiful! Take some time to sit back and enjoy some of the maps and towns you will encounter. Especially take careful notice of the cut scenes. (If you decide to get the game.)
- Combat: The combat system is incredible. (As long as you don't button mash circle all day.) Take some time to fully explore the many different combat styles Star Ocean has to offer. You can get right into action and attack monsters with your combos, or sit back and heal your team while they hack and slash away at the enemy.
- Crafting: You could literally spend hours collecting resources (aka harvesting, gathering, fishing etc.). Once you collect a variety of resources, Star Ocean gives you the opportunity to craft your future weapons. cook food, etc. Expect to find yourself spending a majority of your hours getting familiar with this feature. The possibilities are endless!
- Characters: The amount of playable characters in this game is awesome. There is a multitude of endings specific to certain characters. Take full advantage of the ability to use any character in battle.
- Extras: There's a bunch of extras to partake in after you complete the game. Definitely worth checking out. (I won't spoil what these are for you guys that like surprises.)
- Music: The soundtrack is absolutely beautiful.
- Boss fights: Some bosses require some serious preparation and strategy. Easily one of the most entertaining aspects of the game.
Cons:
- Story: The main story line can be completed in under 20 hours. Star Ocean usually has around 60+ hours. The story also lacks any real depth. I didn't feel a connection to it at all. The characters feel empty a majority of the time.
- Combat: (Yes I realize I have it listed as a pro). The ability to simply sit back and button mash circle for strong attacks is ridiculous. It's difficult not to do. You also have the ability to sit back and just fire long ranged attacks all day. Many exploitable methods that ruin the combat system.
- Characters: Very under developed. Characters will frequently talk over each other. Sometimes you'll find yourself realizing that you only really care about 2 or 3 of the main characters.
- Open world: It's massive but feels extremely empty. Just like the characters. Monsters respawn in the same exact locations within minutes of each other. You'll find yourself backtracking for nearly 75% of the game until you unlock fast travel. And trust me, it's not enjoyable.
- Missions/Side quests: Feels extremely grindy. Rewards aren't very good.
- Save spots: I don't mind saving the old fashion way, but the locations of some of the save spots will make you want to tear out your hair.
- Camera: The camera is annoying. Having to frequently adjust it so you can see your enemies properly is not something you want to be doing.
I enjoyed playing Star Ocean 5. However, I highly suggest waiting for the price tag to fall below $59.99. It was definitely not worth the full price. I hope they come out with some new updates/patches. If you absolutely need it now, pull the trigger and buy it. This game isn't a Must Play, but it definitely is worth giving a shot.
