I've really enjoyed my time with Atelier Sophie.
Every time I turn it on I feel like I'm watching an episode of my favorite anime that's unfolding everywhere around me.
There's a handfull of fully voiced cutscenes, but a bulk of them are text only little flavor-text side conversations.

You leave town, battle monsters and collect things.
You return to town, craft things and experience the story and characters.

I really enjoyed this gameplay loop for the first 10 hours, but ultimately ended up feeling like I was just running on a treadmill caught in.. well, a loop.
I'll come back to it every now and then, but at this point I feel like I've seen all I care to see, and I don't think I'll be seeing this one through to the end unfortunately.

I haven't enjoyed an Atelier game this much since I played Totori a few years back. Its over all a bit more relaxed as you don't really have a time limit. There still is a calendar, but the events are not time sensitive, so no more stressing out about going out to explore, or make an item before a date. Its based more on synthesis of key items so it makes the game more manageable.

The battle system is simple, similar to other games in the series however you cannot get any character in reserve into the current battle. And again later bosses in the game have a two stage power setting that can get you if you're not prepared for it.

The synthesis is quite enjoyable, as you can get several different cauldrons as the story line/exploration develops and you can improve them. its a bit of a puzzle mini-games and there are hundreds of items that can be synthesized. This is indeed one of the games in the series with the most amount of items you can synthesize.

The friendship system is vastly improved. Now you don't have to grind to be able to fulfill character friendships. Again, this is a result of not having a time when you have to complete certain events.

As a conclusion I can tell you that is less stressful Atelier game, with a decent battle system, superb synthesis system and good friendship and character development.

Another installment of the Atelier series by GUST, and it's made quite an entrance as the first Atelier game to appear on the PS4.
The story is pretty basic, even for the Atelier series, but that's not a bad thing. It lets you focus on throwing your materials into a big cauldron and hoping they turn into something useful.
Speaking of which, this time around there is a new mechanic involving placing your materials (which are assigned colors and tetris-like shapes) into a grid to simulate adding your ingredients. It's a neat little thing because you can add or strengthen the effects of your end products by optimizing your ingredient set up. Of course, if you're not into complicated systems like that, you can safely place ingredients wherever you want without much trouble.
As for the mechanical aspects of the game, it runs at a cool 60 frames per second, and feels noticeably smoother than previous titles. This may vary during certain scenes, but for the most part, the game runs without a hitch. And graphically speaking, the world of Atelier Sophie is quite elegant. The town feels like people would actually live there.
Also, as with many other games in the Atelier line, the battle system isn't too complex or interesting. As far as JRPGs go, it's pretty bare bones. That's fine for fans of the series as they're used to it being that way, but if you're new to the series and jumping in from games like Xenoblade Chronicles, you might find yourself getting bored quickly. However, let's remember that where the Atelier series really shines is the depth of its crafting system, so I can give it a pass.
All in all, a good Atelier game, an okay JRPG, and if you like lots of character interaction and deep synthesis mechanics, it's a good buy.
