Create Alexa Routines for Smart Devices

Use the Alexa app on your mobile device to create Routines that automate how your compatible Echo devices and smart home devices work together.

To create a Routine in the Alexa app on your mobile device:

  1. Go to the menu and select Routines.
  2. Select the + icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select When This Happens, and then choose how to trigger the Routine. For sensor routines, select your installed motion or contact sensor.
  4. Select Add action, and then choose which action it completes. To receive a push notification when a motion or contact sensor is triggered,select Send notification.
  5. Under From, select which device controls the routine.
  6. Tap Create.

Tip: To modify or delete a Routine, go to the Routines section in the Alexa app. Choose a Routine listed in the Enabled section to make your changes.

To manually set up a FreeTime Routine:

  1. Go to the menu and select Routines.
  2. Select the + icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select When This Happens, and then choose how to trigger the Routine.
  4. Select Add Action, and then choose which action it completes.
  5. Under From, select an Echo Dot Kids Edition or other FreeTime on Alexa enabled device.
  6. Select Create.

You can also access FreeTime customizable pre-configured Routines to set up most common daily recurring routines for your kids.

To use a FreeTime customizable pre-configured Routine:

  1. Go to the menu and select Routines.
  2. Select the Featured tab.
  3. Select from the list of categories.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions to customize the FreeTime Routine.

Note: Some features like News, Traffic, Calendars, and push notifications aren't supported on Echo Dot Kids Edition or other FreeTime on Alexa enabled devices.
