Borrow Books from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library

If you're an Amazon Prime member, you can borrow books from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library and read them on your Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, or Fire phone.

The Kindle Owners' Lending Library is available for Amazon Prime members—paid Amazon Prime, paid Amazon Student, 30-day free trial, and customers receiving a free month of Prime benefits with a Fire tablet—who own a Kindle e-reader, Fire tablet, or Fire phone, and features hundreds of thousands of titles. Books borrowed from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library have no due dates and can be delivered to other Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, or Fire phones registered to your Amazon account.

Borrow a Book

You can borrow one book from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library each calendar month. You can deliver the book to compatible devices registered to your Amazon account. Available titles may change each calendar month.

Note: If you've already borrowed a book from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library for the current month, you'll see "Monthly limit reached" underneath the Borrow for Free button in the Kindle Store. When you’re eligible to borrow a book, you’ll see "Prime members only" underneath the Borrow for Free button.

  1. From your device, open the Kindle Store.
  2. Go to the Kindle Owners' Lending Library:
    • Kindle e-readers: Select All Categories or See all categories, and then select Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
    • Fire tablets: Select Kindle Owners' Lending Library. On some devices, you may need to swipe from the left edge of the screen in the Kindle Store, and then select Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
    • Fire phone: Swipe from the left edge of the screen in the Kindle Store, and then tap Kindle Lending Library.

    Eligible titles display the Prime badge.

  3. Select Borrow for Free. If you've already borrowed a book, you'll be prompted to return the book before you can borrow again.

If you cancel your Amazon Prime membership or your Amazon Prime membership expires after you borrow a book, you will lose access to the book you borrowed.

Return a Book

Books from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library have no due dates and can be returned at any time.

Any bookmarks, notes, and highlights in the book will be saved to your Amazon account and will be available if you borrow or purchase the book later.

  1. Visit Manage Your Content and Devices, and then select the Your Content tab.
  2. Select the Actions button next to the book you want to return.
  3. Select Return this book, and then select Yes in the pop-up window.
